The only "edit" I did to the post was adding the last line about the cameras not being suspicious. It took me a good 5 minutes to figure out how to phrase my thoughts so they actually make some sense. I ended up going back and re-editing and adding more detail to pretty much every sentence in that post. I was also trying to hold a conversation with my parents and UER at the same time. So screw the vernacular manslaughter there.

Back on topic. I just feel that we will rule out a perfectly good city if we can't find someone to host the event that is a local. I think the events shouldn't just be: Sleep Here. And here is this huge list of locations: go do what you want. With the large group explorations; I think there is too much organization and the main problem I've seen before is coordination. Just so much time and stress is spent on trying to get everyone to one location, it brings a fun gathering to a stand still and then we end up with huge blocks of wasted time and "where are you? no meet us here. ok? then try and keep up with our lead crazy driver" phone calls.

I understand that some people will like to have the whole holding hands thing. But that's not really what it's about. It's about meeting new people and having some adventures. "I came all this way and didn't get to explore anything" is a pretty common complaint. Oh well. Shit happens. It's happened to me. It will probably happen again. Deal with it.

Even if no one "hosts" it ... if we can agree on a location and agree to meet certain places at certain times and if you miss the boat; instead of holding up the meet waiting around for two people to show up. Those two people will have to find something on their own...or just participate late.

No one wants to put up with an assload of people in their homes. And no one wants to put their credit card down on a camp site in a state forest for a bunch of strangers who if something happens than they are responsible. Those who do it, I applaud you; but a few bad eggs can ruin the whole cake, so to say. I'm grateful for everyone who has let me stay in their home or backyard or campsite. But it's a constant worry on the mind of the "hosters". And one of the major turn offs to hosting an event.

It's not that bad even a cheap hotel between a few people; for the piece of mind of those hosting it. Usually a few groups end up at the Hotel Inn anyways.

Sentence structure / grammar any better?

DC, FTW.

I'll lead the group into the Anacostia District. We can do St. E's.

Since I missed out on the other 2 MAMUs I'm definitely trying to make it to this one. Honestly, I'm really not worried about how cold it is. You can always put on more clothes. Plus, in the winter you don't have ticks and shit to worry about. And as people have already said, it would probably be better overall if we aimed for a lot of locations rather than who has the best place to stay..after all, people come to check out the abandonments, not to sleep in people's houses/hotels. I, personally, wouldn't be able to make it if the event was held anywhere outside of VA/NC/MD, but if so, sucks for me, I'll try to make it some other time. Obviously, a lot of people are going to prefer that it's hosted near them, so what if people just started saying where they are and what's around them, instead of one person trying to come up with a list of all the cities and locations in the entire Mid-Atlantic?

Like, I'm in Southeastern VA, and we have a couple abandoned WWII sites, a couple old factories (some probably inaccessible now), old historic buildings not too much farther north, and the usual houses and stuff. Plus, if anyone's feeling risky, an automobile (to leave out specifics) plant that was shut down a couple years ago that is still patrolled by guards on most occasions. And, all this is about an hour or so from Richmond, so that may be an option for anyone who missed out on the first MAMU.

What's everyone else got?

Rent the prison in West Virginia again, so that maybe those of us (ie, the majority) who took animal tranquilizers and spent the meet drooling under a school bus will actually get some pictures.

I was looking at the pictures I took in West Virginia just last night actually. Good times, though I remember very little.

OK, I've been to 5 meetups in my life and they all had hosts; the thought of having a meetup without one hadn't even crossed my mind. I still feel like having a host would be a huge advantage, but if it doesn't matter to you all then nevermind what I said about needing a host! I will include the host-less cities on the vote.

I'm not trying to micro-manage or make all the decisions myself here; I'm just trying to make sure shit gets done.

You don't necessarily need a "host" but you do need one or more people who are willing to do at least a little planning, scouting, and preparation.

Personally, I would not be comfortable inviting people to my area en masse without doing a great deal of prep work, but that's just me.

A host isn't really necessary. Those who are savvy can find free places to stay and those who are un-savvy are usually rich enough to pay for a hotel. Locations are not hard to track down, and are kindergarten level easy if you're like me and prefer the high stuff.

A good idea to consider would be to search the web for other conventions or conferences we could piggyback off of and snag free food and junk from their hotel. Print off some fake badges or whatever.

The only picture I have is of me passed out on top of mannequin head in the Sugar Shack. It is full of orbz and fail.

The only thing I remember is shotgunning in the parking lot and concocting a crazy plan to visit King's Island.

That said, can I change my vote to King's Island?

I wouldn't mind here and we don't need a host. I don't mind helping with a event again if need be.

Would getting in contact with local paranormal people help? I bet they know some abandoned places... maybe not industrial ones so I dunno.

PS I was just kidding about the vernacular manslaughter, and I meant that you burned DJ Craig, not that there was anything wrong with your phrasing =D

I'll try to make it wherever it happens to end up being, especially if DJCraig will let me ride with him (which he should, or I'll kick his ass)...

Having a host would be nice. Knowing definite ways into buildings and having people familiar with the area is always a plus. But... it isn't completely necessary, as has been pointed out.

Winter has some definite advantages - like no ticks and the lack of unruly underbrush that demands the attention of the machete you didn't bring with you. But it's also cold. For that, DJCraig came up with a brilliant solution in addition to layers of clothing. Hot Hands. Seriously. Put those in your gloves/tape them to you/etc. and you're golden. It doesn't help inhaling cold, cold air or really make much difference if you're already sick... but it does make life much more pleasant. Plus if you are afraid of hypothermia you can always spoon naked. And hey... that could work out nicely.

DC seems like both a good and bad idea to me. Good in that carrying camera gear around won't seem suspicious, but bad in that a) it has an insanely high crime rate and b) Homeland Security and the ridiculousness surrounding "terrorism." Trespassing might not be such an easy thing to wiggle your way out of if caught. I don't know though - anybody have any experience with that?

Personally I'm really liking the sound of Atlanta, DC or Nashville. The last 2 MAMU's have been in somewhat small cities; I think it would be cool to have one in a really big city? Bigger cities are probably easier to do without a host too, I would think?

Nah, wasn't my intention, nothing against DJ ... me and him are cool. The reason OPEX 59 didn't happen this year is no one wanted to step up and "host" it. Last years hosts didn't want the hassle again. I had the option of of being the one to host it in CT. But I (though it was a mutual decision between myself and a few friends not to do it) didn't have the time, money, or stress tolerance to do it this year.

Of course, a core group of people will need to plan the meet; scope things out, etc. But we just eliminate so many viable cities when no one steps up to rent a campsite or open their doors. And if no one steps up ... than the burden falls back on local people who don't want to host it but feel obligated to. That or the meet just doesn't happen.

Y'know... I realize now that Atlanta/St. Louis/Nashville have about the same crime rating at DC... but for some reason, DC just feels way less safe to me. Granted, the last time I was there I was 12. So, y'know... likely just a perspective switch or something. St. Louis was DEAD when I was there this summer. There wasn't any traffic on the streets at all. It was insane to be in a big city and see hardly anyone around.

And Coley...

Let's but the anta back in ATLanta.
