I know this may seem like a long-shot, but did anyone manage to get a look around Family Kartways in Whitby before they built those cookie-cutter homes? I remember the main building where you paid to get in and got your tickets, and the arcade on the second floor. Another place I really enjoyed as a youth. Hard to believe that what was at one time the world's biggest go-cart track is now gone.

I completely forgot about this until right now. Man, I spent a good chunk of time there when I was a kid. I wish I could remember where it was.

Just asked my dad... he says it was on hwy 12, east side of the road between Brooklyn and Whitby. He also says I was there once when I was young, can't say I remember...

Where did it used to be?

On Brock, north of Taunton. The corner where there is a Petro Can now was where my Dad's first shop was located. I remember going to Family Kartways a lot as a kid. Sad to see it go. The area is pretty much 'terra icognita' to me now.

Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back.

There are still a few abandoned houses in the area, possibly portions of the track overgrown with vegetation. But for the most part, it's now a new 'burb. It's not all that bad, I mean, it was the home of a fun place at one time. I just wished I had taken some pics when I was last there, it closed up and was torn down really quickly.

Back in the day if someone was having a birthday party, then it was probably at Family Kartways. I have vague memories of it, but i can remember certain layout details of the park. It had awesome water slides and had the the world's largest go kart track during its operational days. I was disappointed to hear of its closing, but it seems to be a common thing in Whitby. Family Kartways Amusement Park will sadly be missed.

I was told it opened in 1962 and after years of financial trouble finally closed its doors in the late 80's/early 90's. If anyone has a confirmed year of closing (i've heard anywhere from 1986-1992) please let me know. Just curious to know how long the park was in operation for.

I last raced there in the summer of '96, went back to ride in '97 and it was a ghost town.

My 2000 MapArt map book still shows the track there, so my guess would be no later than 2001. When I think about it, Family Kartways, Cullen Gardens, the old Whitby Jail, hell even the old Whitby Psych, this town has had some really cool places that are now gone! Yet I still love Whitby?!!

There is nothing left of family kartways now. I bought one of the cookie cutter houses in the neighborhood and have dug up many pieces of the track while building my patio and planting gardens.

That's funny... in an ironic kinda way as I've been looking to buy in that location as well. Still even some exterior shots would be nice, I can't find any on the interweb.

I wonder if the same thing is gonna happen when they build houses at Concord Floral... people will be digging up broken glass for the next 700 years.

Thanks Hlywud, I drive by that area often and shake my head at the opportunity missed. Oh well, I'll just hitch a ride with Big Daddy D once he gets his time machine up and running again! ;p

I like how they interpret the Go-Kart track into a map symbol as a whole bunch of random squiggly lines.

My prediction from such a track in simple algebra

just my 2 cents
