The Maze, WARNING: light painting
< on 8/10/2009 1:44 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

Hi all

I recently went on a photo shoot exploration with octopus7. A few hours spent down inside the 'Maze' tunnel, Melbourne.

Basically, we're venturing into painting with light, so, still wet behind the ears and using digital SLR with standard kit (wide) lens, here are a few results.

feel free to stroke or crush the ego

1

I don't know where the rest of me went, but looks kinda funny

2

Using the light wheel and that's me at the end, slightly blurred holding the wheel
157sec exposure

3

Created with myself and octopus7
137sec exposure

4

me in the tunnel stretching my arms and legs

5

The 'Maze' less is more

6

the exit using natural light.

He and Octopus laid this secret bare in the Flashlights, Torches, and Portable Lighting forum (hint hint)

It's great to see some different stuff in the light painting world.

2 and 4 are definitely my favorites. I don't know anything about the light wheel but I'm going to check it out just to see what it is.

On #2 I wish the bright spots on the floor of the tunnel right near the bottom of the frame weren't there though. They really distract from the incredible patterns.

On #4 I'd like it if the bright bright spot behind one of the legs was toned down so that there was still detail in the wall of the tunnel. The lighting otherwise does an awesome job of accentuating the tunnel walls.

#1 is cool but dark, the foreground needs more light and i think the last one feels a bit centered. I would probably say it would work better with a wider angle lens to make the opening feel further away and maybe shoot from a different angle to exaggerate the lines of the tunnel. Nice lighting though.

Thanks to all for the comments and critique, and I agree with everything you have said.

^Above pic's was our first proper attempt in a circular tunnel using the 'lightwheel'. Plenty to learn from that experience, hope to do better in the near future.

"We" got the light-wheel idea from someone already doing amazing stuff, so feel free to do the same.

2 is AWESOME! Very cool 3-D effect goin' on.

I really like the idea of 4.

And 5 looks like all of the "snapshots" stitched together of what my mind would take of the drain while walking through it with a flashlight. Pretty nifty!

And not bad for just starting to play around with light painting.

You're all too kind. Myself and Octopus7 still have a few tunnels to paint, but the rain won't let up.

I don't like how you can see your lighting element in 5, but other than that, these photos made me crap my pants. That's how awesome they are.

I too prefer not to see the lighting element, but on this occasion, for mine, it kinda works.

Also, I feel more than obliged to continually have you crap your pants. Cheers SMSailorNeptune
