| | Athens Asylum: a few old interior pics < on 8/4/2009 2:33 PM >
| | | Going through some old family pictures recently, I cam across something really interesting: pictures of the Athens Insane Asylum! I first explored this place in 1989, when I was a student at Ohio U. Unfortunately, I can't find my pictures of the exterior, because they were really cool, dating to before the renovations. I also know I had more interior shots, including of the stain the dead woman made on the floor. These pics feature some artwork we found in one of the buildings. I don't remember which one, but it could have been the old Beacon School building, which is the one farthest up the hill and isn't, to my knowledge, renovated yet. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
When my buddy saw the caveman picture he said "We're outta here!" I had to come back later to get a good look at it. Also, check out the old school flashlight in the tunnel-entrance pic. I think I still have it!

| | | Nice shots. I think you're right that that building is the old Beacon School, although everyone on flickr seems to think it was a tuberculosis ward..

It's possible it was both. Speaking to my wife, she reminded me that we found books in there that said they were from the school, and it's certainly possible it was a TB ward earlier.

| | | I read about the legendary stain (hauntedohio.com?) and find it silly. But, it's a cool thing for college kids to check out. And remember, all tales of college dormitory "hauntings" exist only to forewarn young women of the dangers of sexual relations, i.e. don't get along w/that boy for certainly you will be moiderlized.

| | | Um, whoa, I want to see this place- and photograph it! We have only modernized or non-existant asylums around Minnesota (some great ones, but no longer here in their fantastical state). The stain on the floor? Please elaborate briefly!

| | | I should mention though, that St. Peter and Fergus Falls still have remnants of a former glorious radiance (St. Peter is still active and Fergus Falls is, I think, now obsolete but not explorable). Cambridge Mental Hospital would be the closest thing to Athens (as far as exploration goes), but it has been recently utilized as other business ventures, and is no longer explorable. From what I remember of looking at the map on the campus and doing the subsequent research, that building really far away, up the hill, past the research lab *is* the old TB hospital, and it's also absolutely and totally trashed, scrapped, graffitied, and a local hangout spot for punk kids. I think it was built in the 1920's-ish and came about as a really far-away outbuilding away from the Kirk to, obviously, quarantine the contagious patients far away from the rest of the patients/staff. It's also outfitted with gigantic sun porches, which were pretty common to TB buildings. My only trip to that building lasted a very short amount of time and resulted in one of the best 'scaring the piss' out of local vandals moments ever.
Get down, girl, go 'head, get down. |

The stain comes, reportedly, from a woman who left he asylum and got into one of the closed buildings (the ancillary buildings closed long before the main building) and couldn't get out. For some reason, the legend goes, she took off her clothes, lied down and the floor and died. Her body wasn't found for a while, and after they removed it, her bodily fluids left a stain on the floor. It's been about 20 years since I've been there, but apparently the stain is still there. If I remember correctly [leans back in rocker and drags on corncob pipe] it was in the second-last building as you go up the hill, on the top floor. I plan on checking it out this fall, during my UE tour of SE Ohio.
