Central State Hospital, formally know as Central State Hospital for the Insane. Located on the west side of Indianapolis. Opened in 1896 and closed in 1994 due to funding issue and allegations of patient abuse. Cops everywhere due to the police stables located on the hospital grounds. I used a 35mm.

I like 5 and 7.........idk about indiana but it's generally bad form to post a locations name on a public thread as they tend to get vandalized shortly after.....especially when it's not public in the UE DB.

I'm being kind but most around here won't be.

Grats on finding the location, but you really should have checked out the museum, it's pretty cool.

WTF indeed.

The place was fairly well known before this post. The past several years it took a real beating after the city sold it to a private developer and they stopped boarding up any windows or patrolling. Some blame the locals from the neighborhood, but I've been told it's the ones from the outlying areas that really trashed it. Not to mention the paintball damage in Bahr, that was done by cops. Not sure who is laying claim to the property now. Last time I was there I was stopped on my way to the museum by a guy that said he was "DMD" which is the city Department of Metro Development. Anyway, he followed me all the way to the old pathology building. Nightbird is right though, the museum is definitely worth checking out! They have some old slides of patients on the 2nd floor.

If you go to the medical museum, it focuses mostly on medical history in Indiana in general so be sure to mention your interest in the asylum history. Jerry or Ginny are usually the 2 to talk to and are happy to show you around, especially if you call or email ahead of time. That map is good but doesn't show the first Kirkbride or the cottage buildings built in the 1930s. Asylum Projects has some good info, maps and photos....
