A few of the old cottages were vacant, but were equipped with obvious P.I.R's. Also, I believe that the main building now functions as a city hall or something of that nature. It's a fun place to take a walk anyways.

| | | | The Anoka State Hospital is actually called a Regional Treatment Center now. They added a large addition to the property (to the right of the attached picture in the first post). It houses sex offenders and other individuals. The old buildings are still somewhat in use. Looking at the picture the OP attached, the road entering the picture at the bottom left is 4th street. The building to the immediate right has been leveled and is now a parking lot, the next two buildings have had an addition built between them and this complex serves as the Workhouse. A number of the buildings look occupied, some look abandoned, I know some people have gotten in to one of them to look around..
The main attraction at this place in my opinion would be the underground tunnel system that links the buildings together. Supposed to be a pretty creepy area.

though it's interesting, if you do some searches for Anoka State Hospital, there are about two dozen stories of ghost sitings by Hospital employees. Folklore says:
"Mental patients were known to try to escape through the tunnels, were caught and murdered, or committed suicide by hanging themselves from the pipes along the ceiling of the tunnels. Spirits have been heard laughing and whispering, and have been known to appear in the tunnels, which are now closed except to security and maintenance."

Though I think it's fair to say that the hospital did do some pretty weird things. Right now they administer programs for the treatment of mentally ill adults from Anoka, Hennepin, Sherburne, and Ramsey counties, and treats chemically dependent adults from Sherburne, Anoka, and Hennepin counties. An infirmary and clinic are provided for the physical health care of all residents at the hospital.
Any previous programs, a treatment center for the mentally ill with tuberculosis (1948-1967) as well as programs for emotionally disturbed children and adolescents (1970s), have been discontinued.

The discontinuation of those programs, I'm going to assume, is the cause for some abandonment on the complex. And the tunnels are used for security and maintenance.
