| | | One interesting characteristic of Detroiters --and I had it too after being a resident for a year or two-- is that they better than anyone else realize how utterly, chronically, acutely phucked-up the city is, yet they will often try to defend the city when 'outsiders' critique it. Usually they have no real defense, but just lash out at the detractors in a vulgar & sometimes violent fashion, which provides the outsiders with a hint of the sad mentality that is Detroit. Some of them are naive enough to not understand that the scale and duration of Detroit's woe's do make the city very unique.

^^^^ No, not really. Is it so hard to believe that someone might actually find happiness and serenity in the city of Detroit? Hooligan, I'm going on 7 years living IN Detroit and I still love the D. I even bought property here and wouldn't live anywhere else. Not saying I plan on being here my entire life but I do enjoy it immensely. I'm also far from naive about the problems of Detroit; (my own words) http://onlyndetroi...detroit_exodus.htm I probably understand it better than 99% of the people who consistently come around on the Internets and poo-poo the city and people for living here. Have you ever noticed that people constantly have to defend their choice of living in the city against those who believe that nothing good could ever come out of Detroit? If you did you would understand why so many simply lash out. I'm (we are) sick of people who either know nothing about Detroit and just want to pile on to the misery of the region, OR...the people (you maybe) who were eaten alive by a big, tough city then ended up leaving. They just want to justify their excuses for giving up and moving on. I grew up in the Suburbs in a nice white neighborhood and was miserable and angry all the time. After High-school I moved to Detroit and started over. I can't describe the feelings and weight lifted off my shoulders being here. Yes, its Fucted! Yes, it's bad here. Yes, Detroit has a Loooong way to go but that doesn't mean that you should make me ( or anyone) who chooses to live here feel like less of a person because this is what makes me happy. You said: "Usually they have no real defense, but just lash out at the detractors in a vulgar & sometimes violent fashion" I say I love being in a big city, even if it's Detroit. I can urban explore everyday if I choose, I can do my photography at hundreds of thousands of locations any day I want. I live close to my job. I have family, and a ton of close friends here. I love the attitude of Detroit..."what doesn't kill me makes me stronger". There are hundreds of my own personal reasons I love living here. Will they be the same as someone else, No, but please save me your stereotyping and pathetic attempts to discredit me or other Detroiters for living in Detroit. Maybe the city is better off with out you? Something also has to be said about ones mindset after living in both extremes. In the suburbs people are so concerned about status and wealth (material possessions) in the hood people are concerned with surviving and innovating. Living here is a minimalist life no doubt. I have found I need way less living here. I find things in my surroundings to keep me busy and happy, I can honestly say I love it here, maybe for different reasons than the mainstream would believe but I do. One thing is for sure, Detroit is always interesting. I've always wanted to find a way to help Detroit. Sitting on the sidelines or hell, even the bleachers and tossing garbage on the field does nothing for anyone. If you want to change something I say start on the inside, put your money where your mouth is, then you can tell me you know whats what. /...my.2¢...\ Done.

| | | IMO, Detroit isn't more racist than anywhere else, but there's nowhere in the country where you'll see the effects of racism as plainly. It's the most segregated metro area in the country by most measures. It's by far the city with the most disinvestment, largely because of the us vs. them mentality in regional government. If I abandoned my car in a field for 40 years, by the time I came back to it, the repair costs would FAR exceed the cost of buying a new car. That's kinda the hole Detroit is in. It's more expensive to build there than in the suburbs and the infrastructure sucks, so why would I move my company there? Half the city moved out (and the population continues to drop), so you've got such low population density that services are wildly expensive. Property values are so low that there's no tax base. The economic heart of the city is _still_ declining. There are very few rich Detroit (city proper) residents to provide philanthropic money. There's no effective city government and regional government is run by people that want the city to fail. The transit sucks. The schools are tragically bad. Whites are still terrified to go anywhere but Comerica park. The list goes on and on and on... There's lots of good people and stuff left there, and you gotta love Detroiters, but successes in Detroit are just plain going to be at the small neighborhood level rather than city-wide. Unless politicians become willing to relocate a bunch of people and bulldoze huge swaths of the city....but then again, the history of redevelopment in the city would probably kill that idea IMMEDIATELY. Regarding Detroiters being critics of the city but not being able to handle others criticizing the city....duh? I talk crap about my dad all the time, but if one of you bastards says one negative word about the man we WILL have issues. You stick up for your own even if your own are screwed up.

From article
Mohyi partnered up with Summer in the City, a group who mentors inner city kids.

That's the most white people I've ever seen on that side of Detroit.?? Where are the real inner city kids??? Either way I love that place, I was there back in May, I slept on the roof top for three nights. Edit: I spent over a week living on the streets of Detroit, the only people that gave me shit were the white gangster kids near the 8 mile side of town, up until then everything was cool, I even got drunk with some of the black gangsters, and some home bums. I don't people can even afford bullets in Detroit these days.
Side note: Some white guy tried to rob me the day I got to my hometown, he was trying to impress his black friends, I guess by robing a homeless man. He did'nt get shit. Double Edit: Just watch this. http://www.youtube...atch?v=ujjsmaxm2_0 [last edit 7/15/2009 6:46 PM by Shuga_Shane - edited 2 times]

| | | I think it is interesting to read how this forum started out with helping Detroit, to defending how its not completely phucked up... It does not matter what your stance is on the city, who cares. What I think matter's most is that there are a lot of historical land marks and great UE places. But what seems to happen most is that people get side tracked in meaningless bantering and forget about acting, and acting can prevent these great land marks from disappearing.

You spit on and insult something someone loves, and you're surprised when they react emotionally? It doesn't take a special case for someone to respond that way. When someone insults my mother, I don't usually have a real defense, it's usually just a knee-jerk reaction to someones unfounded and unwarranted disrespectfulness. If you're going to spit on these people's home town, something truly beloved yet heart-breakingly tragic to them, then be prepared for emotional responses.

| | | Detroit is hands down without a doubt the coolest fucking place i have ever been in the world. and i have traveled a a fair amount. when i leave detroit, i am sad. and all i can think about all month is making time go faster so i can go back. you wanna know what detroit is like? fucking go there. go there a lot. and then form an opinion. and try basing that opinion on facts, not fabrications or projections of your life goals and views. detroit has soul and character and beauty like no place i have ever been. it's post apocalyptic, it's opulent, it's surreal, it's horrific, it's breath taking, it's fascinating, it's frightening, and Detroit is fucking REAL. i love detroit so much i am saving to buy an abandoned church (to make it into an art gallery) as soon as i can afford it. and i go there monthly til that goal is achieved. 13 freaking hours drive from me, but worth every minute.
hell, i wish i was there right now.
