| | | | Doran Mills: Shelby, NC (4 pictures, 2 rather large) < on 7/8/2009 1:12 AM >
| | | So I decided to drop by this place after work. This visit wasn't as successful as I had hoped it would be. I mostly just got some shots of the exterior and a couple of shots from naturally lit rooms (my light died, commence with the ridicule). Below is a picture of the exterior from outside the fence:
Walking around the perimeter reveals that there isn't a need to climb the fence as you can get in via some other buildings partially outside the perimeter, or the large gaping hole in the fence. You can sort of see the path in this shot down in the lower left corner.
This is in one of the outside rooms that had some natural light, quality is bad because it was taken with my phone (my camera died, commence with more ridicule).
I called it quits after the room in the shot below, partially because my phone was rapidly becoming unfit as a light source, and because I got the hell scared out of me by this cat who had apparently been stalking me for awhile, then startled when I turned around and let out a blood curdling screech. Most of the light in this room was from the camera flash.
I plan on returning either tomorrow or Thursday to go deeper into the building and get some more interesting shots, hopefully with a friend this time. I just thought I'd throw what I have so far out there. If anyone has any questions or criticisms or advice to offer I'll be glad to hear it.

Stuff like this is the only reason I've put my location on my profile. I do drains and abandonments around here, though I've lacked time to hunt them down in Raleigh. Go to MAMU II. I have watchwords all over the site so I can hopefully find locals.
OP: I like the factory and look forward to your non-scouting trip pictures ;)

| | | I'm going to be a freshman there this year, maybe we'll see each other around. I just got back from the mill today. Went with a coworker and his friend today, spent about two hours in there. The main room was disappointing because all the machinery had been stripped away and it was just a huge empty room, the novelty of it wore off pretty quickly, but we were able to get to the roof and look around in the basement as well. I think we also found the remnants of the HR office, there were a lot of papers strewn around with worker evaluations and layoff paperwork. I took tons of pictures (don't worry I won't inundate the thread with them) and should have them posted later tonight as soon as I can get flickr to remove the limits on uploading. >__<

| | | Ok, so I went back to explore it properly this time with a coworker and 2 of his friends. I hid the car in a better place this time because we were going to be there for a good while. The entire set is here on flickr, but I'm going to pick the ones I think represent the trip the most to show here. http://www.flickr....72157621066188225/ The shot below is a better picture of the room with the cat in it, below is a vat of some sort that was filling up with rainwater from the thunderstorm going on outside. My best guess is that these poles used to be some sort of mixers?
We then went up a staircase in the back of that room and ended up in a huge room, reminded me of the Mines of Moria. The room extended for about 100 meters to the left, it was probably about 50 meters across. At one time I imagine there was tons of machinery in this room.
One of the rooms off to the side of the main room had a box that was about 3 meters high. my friends went off to check out where that hole in the wall led to while I climbed it.
DANGER!
We then proceeded to explore around the underground level, finding nothing really interesting as it had mostly been stripped clean. There were several very old security cameras hanging off the wall by their wiring. After we were done there we went outside to see about getting on the roof. As it turns out there was just a metal ladder that wasn't too rusty that got us up to the first level of the roof, and another that got us up to the 2nd. This is the view of the other building that was connected, but we hadn't explored yet as seen from the roof of the building we had entered.
After that we explored around the other building, it was more of the same from the first building, gutted machinery and broken glass everywhere. After that we walked down the railroad tracks to see if there was anything cool under the bridge near there, but it was just a bridge, not even any graffiti. One thing I noticed was that pretty much the entire site was free of graffiti. All in all it was a fun trip, except my coworker kept quoting horror movies and the Alien movie. He also noted that it reminded him of the Nazi Zombies Gametype from Call of Duty: WaW. As I mentioned in the first paragraph, the rest of the shots are in the flickr gallery. Feel free to ask questions, or give me photography advice. I am no photographer, so excuse the picture quality. ^_^

| | | Very cool. I'm at State as well; we're getting quite a posse going over here! This place looks pretty epic, even if it is empty. I like that third shot in the second set. Next time, you should climb the water tower, though! (I say this since I'm way to chicken to ever climb a water tower!)

I actually looked into that, we went around the side of the building after looking around on the roof. Even if the ladder is not rusted through to hell, you need a machete to even get to it, the undergrowth is so thick. I'd like to do one more trip to see if I can't get on top of the roof in the picture on the second set. The water tower though looks like a rusty deathtrap.

HAH, I just happen to have just the tools for getting to the ladder, and am crazy enough to try and climb it I'll be out of the state for a while, but I'll let you guys know when I get back, maybe we can hook up and do the place in depth or is that height? lol

| | | There's a lot of scrapping going on here, especially on the water tower side. That's why you see the tire tracks to the rear of the property clearly still. So, just a heads up to watch yourself, I almost walked right into some guys here once and noticed cops drive down the dirt road near the electrical sub station.
I become capability. I become the horror. What we know we can become only in our heart of darkness. It's my gift. It's my curse. |

I haven't run into anyone yet and have been 4 times. I guess I just got lucky. Thanks for the heads up though, I will be more cautious in the following trips.
