What once was Newcastles seediest Pub - Australia

At least you could still get a beer there at 6.00am after a night on the town! :)

Truth be known, it doesn't look that much different now to when it was operating (give or take a few tables & chairs).

Newcastle is quickly becoming an urbexers wet dream, there are way too many abandoned buildings right in the heart of town. As much as I like to explore, it is a shame to see a town we all once loved go this way.

Sorry about the quality of these pics, I was a bit disappointed to see the way they had turned out once I got home & uploaded them.

Truth be known, I really do not know.
However, I suspect that their liquor licence may have been revoked as you could always get a beer there, regardless of what state of consciousness one was in

It would not have survived in Newcastle in recent years though as we now have 1.00am"lock out" laws and 3.00am closing times due to a lot of violence around the town. It didnt work, the dickheads are still out there.

I'll do my best to find the true reason for the closure & let you know
(google doesnt seem to want to do the work for me today)

Edit: My fondest memory (possibly the only one) was seeing a gentleman run past our table vomiting into his hand with it spraying out the sides everywhere. Just to return from the toilet 2 minutes later, go to the bar & get another beer. Great place for the family & kids!

There's a very high probability I was that running person with vomit flying.....well maybe. I was once based at the Singleton Army training barracks and every Friday night we'd head to Newcastle for the weekend to get SMASHED (and laid). I remember we'd stay in the cheapest hotel, a run-down derelict place that looked very grand and 1940s.....but for the life of me can't remember what it was called. I'm sure it'd be no longer in use due to its age. From memory there was a mental asylum next to the Stockton rifle range that always looked (and sounded) interesting.

You may think you can fly.....but you'd better not try it.

Believe it or not, I was actually over at that asylum last Friday
Just unfortunate that I was there on business though.
Although I did hint to the head engineer that I could spend a day just walking around & taking photographs around the site. Unfortunately no guided tours were offered though

However, I still do love the way my job & previous working / business history has given me paid scouting time

Newcastle was a great place about 6 months ago for URBEX, unfortunately a lot of topside locations are or have been torn down (Royal Hospital, Harbourside Hotel, Wiraway Apartments, Parts of James Fletcher mental hospital, BHP steel works) but there are a few smaller places left, mostly pubs, theatres and a few workshops. Got to be careful in abandoned buildings around Newcastle though, lots of squatters in the inner city, when we did the harbourside hotel mid 2008, there was a few living there, they had stashed golf clubs all over the place to protect their squat.

The pub in your pics, that's the one across from the Ducks Nuts isn't it? Was turned into a gym a few years ago then set on fire. Did you ever check out the empire hotel or the great northern before they were renovated/converted?

Yep, thats the pub!
Cant say that I had much of a chance to explore Newcastle (apart from new developments & renovations) over the previous 7 years as I was running my own businesses and had no time to scratch myself.
Great to be working like "normal" people again nowdays though. Weekends = exploring time now! If you have any hot tips on places around Newie, feel free to email them through.

The highest on my "to do list" at the moment though is a certain shut down Power station at west lake mac (as soon as I figure out how to get in grow my balls big enough to put my plan in to action).

Wouldn't try the power station, very hard to get in, alarmed, PIRs, over zealous onsite guard (chased a few cave claners in his ute around the grounds a few years back) and he keeps a dog there. It can be done but is very risky and hard to enter. Theres a guy on flickr who has been in, knows the caretaker, his pics are http://www.flickr....72157616422457594/

Other than that, you have been to the asylum I believe I saw earlier, theres still most of the apartment block where the Royal hospital was, part of the hotel behind the old abandoned post office (the post office too) and a few decent storm drains and tunnels around if they interest you as well. I think the brambels workshops at carrington are still there, but were pretty vandalized last time I was there, and the site was shared with a chrome platers
