...Divided, HOLY SHIT DON'T FALL!!

Back to "Mill Hell" on a rainy afternoon. No real plan, just getting out of the rain and into the first place we could.

Which turned out to be this guy:
1.

2.

Most of the ground floor rooms were cluttered with years of weird shit - stuff left over from when the silos were in operation, stuff left about from whoever is using the grounds currently, and weird garbage crammed into every corner. We hit the basement first.

3.

(MPuzzle's)
The cobwebs had cobwebs. They were everywhere. Once upon a time, this was a phone. Now it's a haven for cobwebs.

4.

(MPuzzle's)
Conveyors in the darkness carried the grain hither and yon.

5.

Then we went up the express stairs. No getting off and taking a break from the stairs, these run uninterrupted most of the way up. Up here is some sort of a thing that does stuff. With Grain and things.

6.

Some more things.

7.

That's another thing, with some stairs.

8.

(MPuzzle's)

9.

10.

(MPuzzle's)
Looking down the upper conveyor. These belts go from the towers down the long row of silos, which are pretty much open-topped, by the way.

11.

Another long shot down the northern silos.

12.

13.

This belt runs between the two towers. It's pretty.

14.

(MPuzzle's)
There are two floors (and corridors) connecting the two towers. One is regular, the other is green.

15.

This is a control room in the north tower. There were schedules and such dating to 2003, which was a surprise. The place seemed like it had been empty much longer than that.

16.

(MPuzzle's)
A view out the window of the control room.

17.

I don't know, it's pretty?

18.

Big scale. The sticker on it says it was last tested in October of 2005. That was another surprise.

19.

(MPuzzle's)

20.

Looking West towards Downtown. Will have to come back in better weather.

21.

(MPuzzle's)
Top of the world, Ma!

There was helpful graffiti in strategic places on the roof. The flag pole behind me says: "Dance On Me"

I chose not to.

22.

Back inside, to the conveyor. There's a suspended concrete path with a railing, which is good, but there are holes in the floor too, which is bad. It starts out unnerving enough and then you look down the hole. This is the closest we got to a shot that conveys how deep these things are and it doesn't even kind of do it justice.

23.

Stuff comes out of a thing...

24.

...and goes down the way. And you go down the way too, because you're there and that's what you're there to do. And then The Way makes a gigantic hollow creaking noise! And you say, "Holy shit!" and you head back, quickly but evenly so as not to upset anything. And you say, "Did you hear that??" And your friend says, "No, you're a jackass." And you say, "Huh, maybe I imagined it." And then you go back and you get farther over the void and then it makes a horrible sickening cracking noise and you say "Fuck this!" and you head back as quickly as you can.

25.

(MPuzzle's)
And then you grow some balls and just do it. Because that's why you're here.

26.

27.

But at least there's a Fire Escape on the far end!

28.

This is about a 30 second exposure of MPuzzle coming back from a different concrete catwalk over The Void.

29.

There was a crank, too.

In summary: We had a shit-ton of fun, roofs are Awesome!

Thanks for looking, hope you enjoyed it.

Good set, thanks for posting

There are a lot of silos in that last pic Glass posted.

Just to make you more jealous,
there are several "mill hells" in the Minneapolis area!!

BTW, NotBatman, I love your posting. Thanks! I've actually never been in there!

Yeah, I'm just kind of following you guys around the city. (Not deliberately, of course, but for now we're mostly picking the low hanging fruit and having a good time so most things have been pretty well travelled.)

The next place we can trade pics of is a mill on Hiawatha... I've run through the place twice now (alone ftw!) and I don't think I've seen half of it yet.

On topic: I love the color (and the angle) in that first shot!

Thank you kindly. The roof alone would be well worth going back to sometime when it wasn't too wet to properly sit down and enjoy it!

Thank you!

I went one day, just scouting around, and it was wide open. So I went back with a friend a week or so later to properly look around and it was buttoned up pretty tight (and we went to Pig Nut). The next time it was wide open again. Someone appears to be using the place for something, but we didn't dig around the first floor too much.

Don't miss the old wooden mill in MPLS. Not quite as huge as most but still a great time and good skyline view of the city. Look over by the bridge thats going down and you will find it.

There's an active conagra owned mill near the one you posted pics of here that has machines that sound like something out of a scooby doo mystery and is great!

Usually not, but Purina isn't secret or pristine.
