Coast Guard station, Oregon Inlet, NC

We took the family on vacation on Cape Hatteras a few years back, and of course, I had to get in some exploring while I was there. These are of the Coast Guard station at Oregon Inlet. My wife & I looked into buying it - seriously - but the National Parks Service owns the whole area and its not for sale, unfortunately. Would have made a great restaurant.

I also used this opportunity to introduce my son (pictured) to exploring. I'm very proud of him.

What a cool building. I love how the rooms are filled with sand.

And it's getting worse! The sand has pile up so high outside, the 8' security fence is about two inches high. I look at it on Bing Maps the other day, and it looks even more buried.

The weathered paint on the exterior of the building is mint.

I grew up right on the seacoast, only in New England, so I really like lighthouses and other Coast Guard-related things like this. They remind me of roaming around the forts up here when I was a kid.

These are the first interior pics, of this place, that I have seen. Nice job!

This place is awesome. I've been on a few different occasions, and for some reason with different trips, different parts were open or boarded up. The first time I went, the "front door" (I only call it that because it's one of the only ground-level doors visible) was boarded up, the second time it was wide open, and the third it was boarded up again. I have to say one of the coolest parts is the look-out tower, which provides an awesome view of the other dunes and beaches below. It's probably 3-4 stories tall, and 3 of 4 sides of the tower are boarded off at the top. However, to get up there, you have to go up a pretty sketchy staircase, and to be honest I don't even know if it's still standing. Also, because of the dunes around the building, from 3 sides you can't even see the ground-level of one section of the building, but can walk right up to a window on the second floor as if it was on the ground-level, and on another side, walk straight from a dune onto the roof of the building. Definitely worth checking out if you are anywhere on the Outer Banks.

When I was there, I wouldn't even let my son go up there, and he was a good hundred pounds lighter than me. I was also worried about being seen, since there's a fishing area nearby and a lot of people were there. I've looked at it on Bing maps, and it's still standing, though it looks like it's getting buried even deeper. You could probably go in a second story window from the dunes now.

All in all, though, it's a great place to visit, and afterwards you can get crabs from Dirty Dick's!

I've been down to Ocracoke twice this summer, and considered exploring this old coast guard station again. I've explored it back in 2004, and I didn't even see it this time. Right over the bridge to Pea Island I noticed there was a new building that looked very similar to this one. I was worried they had knocked it down and rebuilt it, but seeing as you went around the same time I did, I guess this isn't the case. I'm going to go try to get more interior photos sometime soon.

Edit. I just noticed you said you visited a few years back. I'm worried this is actually gone now. Anyone have the current status?

I was there last month. It looks like they are completely renovating the building (or have already), for what I have no idea. I can't say for absolute sure, but I don't think I'd make a special trip just to go check this place out -- I think you may be disappointed.

That's definitely disappointing. This is one of the coolest locations I've ever visited..and it had a very unique history..but then again I guess that's why they're replacing it..now it will probably become just another little tourist attraction...

This is a great spot, I've been there a few times in the past. The back door used to have plywood covering it and it was loose, almost like hinges. But after that they boarded it up allot better and I haven't been back since.

The NC Aquarium Society owns the building now. I did the electrical work for the Aquarium here and had looked into a power source for the building after they had obtained the building about 5 years ago. They wanted to restore the building and make a museum / aquarium out of the building. The project was lost due to the fast that Dominion wouldn't run power to the location under $50k and a Prime Generator System was too much also. As for now, i'm not truly sure of there plans, I haven't worked with them in a couple years now.

The only other things here on the beach are a few WW2 bunkers and a Ghost Town, Very cool if you don't know about it.

It would be cool if they could build a wind turbine to power the place. There certainly is enough wind there. We've been down there a couple times for vacation, but I think we need to go again. My niece & her husband live in Rodanthe, so we always have an excuse to go.

That could be a possibility, I know there was some talk of the CoastGuard Station installing a windmill, the talk may of been about the "old" CoastGuard Station. I will be looking into it and let everyone know.

I don't know why you would say that......they are the only ones that can afford them.

Also, wind power is becoming a big thing around here, they are researching tidal generators now around here. (wind mills under water)
