Packard Plant Fire ?

I heard a very brief mention on radio station 101 WRIF this morning that there was a fire at the old Packard complex. Did anyone hear anything to this effect ?

Yes, theres a thread on this already but I guess you can't see it. Apparently this one is a bit bigger than the last one but easier for them to fight since it's in a more accessible spot.

It seems it is set on fire about once a week.

Or least once a month, a couple weeks ago the had "smoke showing from quarters" of the closest engine company, I think it was a roof fire again.

9/11/01 all gave some, some gave all. 343.

The other night three new blazes were set and 25 percent of the city's fire department fought it over the course of the night. They were still dousing the flames when I visited the next morning.

We need to visit before it all goes up in flames.

Even though the place didn't produce a car since the 50's many, many auto suppliers did still operate out of there until the mid 80's. Hell there is still one company left there. Not to mention the place DID produce the finest automobiles of the first half of the century & helped the US win the War with it's ability to both manufacture and assemble tanks, boats, planes and weapons.

The reason so many "douchebag photographers" see it as a symbol of Americas Industrial decline is because that is exactly what it is.

EDIT:
sorry

i'm pretty sure that air33 was quoting what was written on the flickr page, meaning whoever wrote that was targeting all of us as the douchebags... sarcasm is difficult to get across with text only communication.

If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!

If that's the case then my bad.

I saw it was a link from sweetjuniper. Dude runs a blog and that would be something he would say. I can't stand him.

Sorry Air33, I didn't read the shit on that link.

While she was quoting from the Flickr page, this "indeed" made me think she was agreeing with them. I don't know, though.

No problem, I just caught wind of it from someone who gave me a nudge via PM.

So I guess Packard is like the brickworks or Toronto, or Firestone of Hamilton, except with way more risk.

When was the machinery removed from this place?

Pretty much since the mid 70's-80's I guess. There isn't much documentation of that kind of stuff until the mid 90's.

The fires really aren't the thing that's going to make the building un-explorable. It's the freaking scrappers. The place will be crumbled / flattened in 5 years...tops.

again...my bad Air.

Its almost as if they are doing a favor, clearing stuff out. The city seems to want to do shit about it. The scrappers could be a part of the plan. I've run into scrappers a few times here, and they always seem to have keys to the place and have their pick-ups inside...or they are removing stuff like contaminated dirt at midnight via the back access.

I think everyone is in on it.
