Representatives from all three levels of government met behind a run down industrial building on Wyecroft Road last week, to announce a $30 million investment in Oakville’s infrastructure.

The Federal and Provincial Infrastructure Ministers, John Baird and George Smitherman, joined Oakville MP Terence Young, MPP Kevin Flynn and Mayor Rob Burton to inform the public about this influx of cash.

The funding is part of a $3.4 billion joint federal, provincial, municipal initiative to stimulate the economy by supporting 1,373 crucial infrastructure projects in Ontario.

“This will be a substantial investment in job creation,” said Baird. “This will be a substantial investment in materials and will help turn around Ontario’s economy. Together we are committed to making a difference; to making things happen.”

The derelict industrial backdrop for the day’s press conference at 430 Wyecroft Road was identified as the future site of one of the projects.

The Town of Oakville will receive $15 million from both the Ontario and Federal governments to finance a new $45 million transit facility.

The Town will fund the remaining $15 million through its capital budget.

“The Town might simply never have been able to afford the full $45 million cost to build this much needed new transit facility,” said Burton. “Only through partnership, could this happen.”

The demolition of the existing building will begin in August and Mayor Burton invited the visiting dignitaries back to Oakville in March 2010 for the grand opening of the facility saying, “You wanted speed ministers. We can give you speed.”

The project will create hundreds of local construction jobs but Burton is confident that it will also have a positive effect on the Ontario’s manufacturing industry.

“This facility will provide a maintenance and operational base to support the greatly expanded fleet of busses that we will buy as we transfer our transit service to the to the gridded model,” said Burton.

Smitherman praised the transit facility project, saying that projects like it enhance resident’s quality of life and that he is pleased that the government partnership could make an investment of this kind.

“What we are demonstrating is that in these challenging economic times governments can come together,” he said, “can respond in a timely way and can find the capacity to put the necessary resources forward to support really, really crucial projects.”

The new transit headquarters will alter the public transportation system in Oakville, by providing Oakville transit with a central location to establish its new, more efficient grid route system.

I noticed this place last week when I drove by after getting disoriented during rush-hour. It was being used as overflow parking for the Canadian Open.

Went by this property today (Wednesday the 5th) mid-afternoon to take a few pictures of the Wait logo on the front of the building. Quite a find to me as there are few of these building left. Anyhow I was curious to see if it was possible to get inside and look around. There were a few doors open on the rear, as well as a couple of crawl-sized large holes punched through the cinder block wall at eye-level. Note one door on the rear of the building on the east side. It's the only one not boarded up (in that particular area) - this particular door is a friction fit. You can pull it out of the hole with your fingers. It's a heavy fire door.

I'm not sure (despite what the article says) that it will be completely demolished. The east end appears to be undergoing some type of renovation. The west end (where the offices are) is being dismantled, and water leaks ignored. A large quantity of what looks like portable fencing (I didn't look closely) is being stored in the central area. Gas and water feeds have been recently marked so someone is going to be digging around soon.

This is a very large warehouse. I estimate it to be approximately 600ft across and 300ft deep (as seen from the road) - no skylights and all windows are boarded up so bring a flash-light.

There has been moderate vandalism; mostly broken glass. Someone has a few targets (bad-guy/hostage) that have been shot-up with a BB-gun in the NW corner of the facility. The lobby has been worked over pretty good, but it still has a good "Three's Company" nostalgic feeling to it.

There are lots of posters and marketing items related to the York Company (the home gym people) still inside.

There are many posters, as well as packaging mock-ups and even a significant quantity of spare parts for grandma's exercycle.

FYI, the electricity to the building is still on, but the main-disconnect inside the building is in the OFF position. I'd suggest to stay away from the fenced-off power-substation on the west side.

Creepy Factor: There is an examination table from a doctors office in the rear of the office area that has been dragged into the large central room. Someone has put a teddy-bear on it.

Background info: It was home to the B.D. Wait Company. They went broke in the late 80's and as a kid I remember them making bbq equipment, a/c units, camp stoves, etc. I believe a US company bought the rights to the name and continues to market products in Canada under than moniker.

I work about three doors down, and across the road from the Wait building.

As i understand it, it was purchased by the owner of York Barbell (farther down the road by about 2 km) sometime after the failure of Wait. The front office was leased to another company. There was an extensive fire in the front office some time in the past 4-5 years, and the windows were left boarded up.

The main warehouse was used for York production overflow storage. That, and storing some classic/semi-classic cars of the owners, and a few others looking for indoor storage.

And the walls came tumbling down.. nothing but large mounds of rubble, twisted roof sheets and dust.

Nothing to see now folks, move along!
