Old College Lab Building (MSP)

A few weeks ago I went out looking around for places to go and I found an abandoned grain elevator with a door wide open. I poked my head in and looked around, but as I was alone I decided to come back with a friend (MPuzzle).

A week later and the door that had been wide open was now barricaded from the inside. We poked around but ended up giving up on it. Fortunately, sitting right in the shadow of the silos, there was another building. Much smaller and less grand, but fun is fun.

(Most of the pics are mine, but some are from MPuzzle.)

1.

(MPuzzle's)

2.

So we made it inside this old, run down, abandoned college laboratory. The whole place had a lovely "Silent Hill" feel of run-down and forgotten desperation to it.

3.

What the hell kind of weird letters are these? Have we slipped into The Mirror Dimension??"

4.

(MPuzzle's)
There was a cool spiral staircase going down into a very dark basement.

5.

And the stairs going up didn't really look any more inviting. Because I already half-expected faceless nurse-things to start lurching and shambling towards us at any moment and those stairs were even worse!

6.

The upstairs was a little more intact.

7.

Gather 'round, kids. We call this a "wooden pen point-maker." They were used to weaponize sticks that were also used to write, in the olden days.

8.

As long as I had a tripod with me, I thought I should try to get some portraits. (MPuzzle on the left, myself on the right. Hi.)

Upstairs was fun, and all. Not a lot going on, but there were some interesting things to see. Then we thought we should check out the basement.

The Basement was Better.
9.

(MPuzzle's)

10.

The tripod makes the basement look like you could see in it. And while it wasn't pitch black, it wasn't this well lighted either.

11.

There were rooms filled with microscope slides and random equipment. There were piles of rubble and discarded... stuff.

And there were weird machines.

12.

This looks like something that would fit right in on some '50's sci-fi, mad-scientist movie. And, frankly, we were in an abandoned lab, so who knows? Maybe it is something from a mad scientist!

Maybe he even lives down here!

(That's what we, in the writing business, call "foreshadowing." It's different from "foreskin." I looked it up.)

13.

(MPuzzle's)
There was also a reasonably well-furnished apartment that appeared to be in some use. There were candles and an oil lamp. There were books and clothes. There were slippers next to the mattress on the floor, for fuck's sake.

It appears to have been used recently (a lack of dust covering things) but not maybe not that recently as there were several notes from previous visitors that appeared to be undisturbed.

Reading the differing notes from different explorers I couldn't help but remember when I was packing up my camera bag: "I'll need a couple flashlights. Can't forget my gloves. Need to make sure there's a place for the scotch. Pens? No, I guess I should leave them home."

Facepalm.

14.

So, yeah, there was some more dark stuff.

15.

(MPuzzle's)
There were lightless rooms full of mostly empty shelves.

16.

The poster lying on the floor really summed up a lot of things about the basement.

Too bad the ceiling was too low for a proper fight.

It was an interesting place, for sure. There was a nice mix of sterile lab covered in years of neglect, there was a nice amount of dark and spooky, there was a nicely appointed apartment of sorts. We really could have stayed in that basement all day photographing all the weird little bits and pieces. Just as things were starting to get interesting in the apartment, however, MPuzzle thought he'd seen someone walk by outside.

We put our pants back on, packed up our things, and we made our way back upstairs to the exit.

Good times were had.

There are a bunch of asbestos removal gloves/sleeves (not full suits, just arms) hanging from the ceiling all over the place in the basement. It's like someone was thinking about cleaning it up at some point and just... didn't.

Ah! A couple friends and I decided to check this place out at night once. Creepy as hell. Its interesting to see some clear day time pictures of the place. I also had a chance to check out the now boarded up grain elevator. Not a whole lot left in the place, but still an interesting trip. Great pics!

Finally a fun place to go camping.

If I remember correctly the gloves were part of the Filter Installation they had stored down there. Not sure though. Its been about a year.
