| | | Dude, you can ask that question in any forum, to 200 different people, and get 200 different answers. Theres risks every where you go. You know your city, you know places that are high crime areas. You just have to go or not go. Thats a decision that is totally yours.

How about, you find ONE, EVEN ONE story of an actual "gang" or "crime" encounter in ANY of the stories in the South forum. Get some perspective, and don't believe everything you hear on Fox.

One of my friends got mugged by a gang in Miami, but that was probably 10 years ago.

| | | I live in Plano and there have been shootings less than a mile from here, one at a dairy queen right next to where I work. There are shootings everywhere. Yeah we got Crips, Bloods, Latin Kings, 13th St. etc etc. pretty freakin scary let me tell you. I did run into a gang of livestock once that turned ugly.
BTW: I heard our own 2x is even the head of a mean biker gang so watch out for him.

| | | I find myself increasingly frustrated every time I read a posting or comment exchange between Crab Soul and, well, just about anyone else on UER. Seems like it always ends up the same way...established UER folks nitpicking on Crab_Soul, and Crab_Soul getting defensive about it. Yes, Crab_Soul sometimes says some things that reveal his lack of experience, not just in UE, but in life in general...hell, he's what, 19? That's gonna happen, he's a kid. But can't we all cut hom a little slack when he says something not quite exactly correct, or that reveals his lack of understanding on some subject...I mean, we're all supposed to be friends here, right? Crab_Soul joined this forum because he's interested in UE, same as we all are...why do we feel compelled to needle him and pick on his every word? We should be more welcoming as a group, and give newbies and younger folks a break as they get their footing. That should be written into a forum charter somewhere, if it isn't. And as for Crab_Soul...try not to take the needling too personally...no one here really wants to be hurtful, I don't think...I think they're just kinda tryin' to haze you a bit, as the new guy. Hell,I think I even made a joke at your expense inone thread a few weeks ago...I was just kidding with you. Please don't anyone take this personally...I just think we could all stand to be a bit more tolerant of each other, myself included.

| | | I think my frustration with "OMG GANGS!" isn't just with Crab_Soul. It's with the whole idea that the world is somehow more dangerous than ever before, that you can't leave your safe suburban enclave without being assaulted, and that random strangers are out to get you. I blame the bastard who killed Adam Walsh for this sad state of affairs. Adam's grief-stricken dad, John Walsh, ended up creating a little show called "America's Most Wanted" -- maybe you've heard of it? In lurid detail, complete with hair-raising re-enactments, it describes how the world is filled with bad guys, and nobody is safe anywhere, because they'll jump out and get you. The success of the show led to copycats, and in 20 years an entire culture of fear has been firmly established. When I was a kid, they told you not to take candy from strangers. Now, they tell my kids to run away screaming if anyone so much as looks at them. All this despite the solid fact that most violent crime happens between people who know each other -- domestic abuse, drug deals gone bad, and the like. Take a closer look at that big wall of "missing and exploited children" on the wall at Wal-Mart -- nearly to a one, they're runaways, or there's a non-custodial parent involved. Cases like Adam Walsh's are tragic, but they are exceedingly rare! Whoever killed Adam Walsh didn't just take away one child's life... he stole the childhood of an entire generation. There are parts of any town that aren't good places to be -- heck, I've detailed some of Dallas' dicier neighborhoods in the "meetup" thread. Reasonable caution will serve you well, and if it doesn't seem right, don't go there. But don't buy into the fear. Most people are just like you... staying alive, trying to get by.

| | | Here is Arizona, insects and reptiles are pretty much the most dangerous things you will encounter. I've had more than my share of run-ins with rattlesnakes, black widows and scorpions. Although the gun+cop thing could happen too. Fortunately it hasn't happened to me yet.
