magnetic interference - degauss

well if youv ever played splinter cell you know he can use a magnetic gun to temporarily knock out camreas and lights. now its probubly unrealistic to use a magnetic "gun" or any sort of long range interferance.

but there are two things i want to try on both lights and camreas.

a degausing coil. and a tape eraser. both have very strong magnets.

the degauser is used to fix your computer monitor when its color starts to show up on it. and when this is happening there is a rainbow of differnt colors on screen.
a tape eraser is used to erase old vhs tapes.
if you were to stick it on your computer/harddrive youd be skrewd. fun to do to your boss before you quit. they cant figure out what did it.

but on the non cruel side...

im wondering if there was a way to pass the degauss coil over a security camera and get by it without damageing or vandalizing it.

what im imagining is :
you hold a pole with the coil up to a camera.
the screen in the security officers room gos fuzzy and flikers around for a bit as you let your buddys past.

Security cameras these days are electronic. I suggest you blow $30 on a really cheap digicam to test it - but you're unlikely to have success with magnets. Good luck though, and let us know how it works!

thats the point lol.

im not talking about useing a tape eraser to erase a tape.

its all about 1 of two things. either the magnetic feild will enterfere with the cameras radio freqency (if its wireless)

or it will cuse a unwanted magnetic feilds to interfere the with cameras own capasitors the same way as it dose a crt monitor. that

A note to the incautious: Be very careful with powerful magnets in your pocket. You'll stick to things you don't expect to. This magnet can suspend you from a steel ladder rung if you're not careful.

It can also crush or possibly REMOVE your fingers from your hand if they get in between it and whatever the hell it wants to stick to.

Also, it's just an overall bad idea in the first place.

I believe radio wave frequency jammers will work on a wireless system.

like the ones the army uses

well these arent MAGNETS. these are magnetic feild emiters.

so once the powersupply is removed or turned off. well.. the magnetic feilds go off. so there is no risk of you sticking to crap.

well there is such a thing as hacking video systems wirelessly. it cost quite a bit thow. you basicly use a homemade device to track the signals and with a transmitter you can transmit your own images.

one such time someone switched mcdonalds and burgerkings security monitor feeds.

I'm only wondering: Is there any tape eraser that are battery powered? Or you'd find a plug first?

My opinion is to go with a plastic bag with some glue in it.

i dont want to damage the camera. just sneak in and look at teh place.

plus thats a no go if it is monitored.

and yea its a plug in but there is most likely some kind of a way to power it. my dad owns battery packs that could run it. but they are pretty pricy and are used to run our camera gear wirelessly.

my co-worker just told me that the cameras would most likely have their imaging chips fuked up.

and i just messed with my dads tape eraser.. yea it would fuk up a camra.

Night vision security cameras saturate the area with infrared. There are two ways to defeat this:

1: Cover yourself in something that keeps all heat inside -- This is may be impossible, but there is this stuff: http://www.discoun...p?pid=552&navid=33
it's a NASA IR blocking fabric. We've been testing security cameras in our lab and I'm hoping to experiment with this stuff.

2. Get a bunch of IR LEDs and put them around your hat - this will obscure your face, but will not prevent whoever is monitoring the video from knowing someone was there.
Problems:
IR LEDs tend to be directional - you'd need to point them in the right direction, or frost them somehow to increase the angle of dispersion
Camera manufacturers could filter out the specific IR LED wave lengths, but, this is minor since very few would upgrade.

There may be some concern about eye damage from long term close proximity of IR and near IR light. If your curious, you can look here:

http://www.hellasc...r_illuminators.pdf This document includes a chart showing the relationship between different wavelengths of IR and near-IR and any potential danger. The products they are referring to in that document are high intensity IR flood lamps for CCTV illumination.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that is the same technology.

y keyoard is roken so have fun reading this
no there is no real prole with ir leds
and ir has nothing to do with heat
trust e i know alot aout ir since i used to e a laertag fanatic useing ir and ir freqencys
ut that is a reason i ring y nightvision since all ir caeras show up like a light in the
just oscuring your face is not enough just wear a ask then
i would use y nvgs and shine the at the caera since there are 6 low power and 10 high power ir leds on it

Uhmmm, degaussing coils don't 'interfere with capacitors' - the interfere with the retrace of the RGB guns inside a CRT, by fucking with the electromagnets that control the beam(s).

As most video cameras are solid state (CCD or CMOS) I don't think a degauss coil will do anything whatsoever. At the most it might interfere a little with the motor used to focus the camera (if fitted) but that's it.

Also, most wireless security cameras use the higher end of the frequency spectrum... The degausser you've got is what, 60hz??

S'not gonna work, IMHO.

Now, a $1 flashlight aimed directly into the cam?? THAT might work.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Turbo has it nailed.. flashlight or laser in the lens... degauss coil will not affect solid state cameras.. only the old tube amp cams.
