|  | | | Hi everyone,
Heading out to Ukraine in September to photograph Pripyat specifically, but also Kyiv as I'll be staying there for 2 weeks. Planning to travel around by train as needed around the country outside of the main city.
Couple of questions:
- Can anyone recommend any interesting and still existing UE locations near Kyiv that can be explored? I'll be with a colleague (big guy) and I speak Ukrainian (conversational) so no worries.
- Are any of you local and want to hook up, photograph with us, or be a UE tour guide?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Obviously the Pripyat/Chernobyl area is nothing but abandonments, but I'm sure there's plenty more to be found in the surrounding areas. Good luck and post photos!

Oh yeah, lots of Soviet-era leftovers abound in Ukraine. I've been doing a lot of research online, but many of the location photos and information are 1 or 2 years old, which of course means that these places can be gone already. It's always best to get recommendations from local UE photogs whenever possible. I'm happy to reciprocate if you're in Toronto anytime.

I'm explorer from Ukraine. If you're interested in undergrounds I really recommend u to visit Odessa katakombs. It is not far from Kiev, so you can go there by train. If you know Odessа katakombs is the biggest handmade underground system all over the world. It is more than 2500 km. I can be your guide there and also can be your guide in Kiev.

Yes, it is. My friend was in Chernobyl last month and this trip costed him $70 + $15(dinner in Chernobyl if you want). For Ukraine, this is quite a lot of money.

Thanks a lot for the offer. We'll definitely put that on our list. We have 2 weeks in Ukraine, with 3 days in Kyiv and hopefully 3 days in Chornobil. That still leaves a full week for exploring all around. We should touch base closer to when we're heading down there and hook up.

Hi Bagdanaka,
OK, questions first:
1) Yes, the area around Chornobil is guarded and has 2 checkpoints that you have to go through. You can arrange for a public tour (with lots of people who will get in your way) and it's just 1 day or you can try to do a private tour. Either way you need to get clearance through the checkpoints using your passport.
2) You can't just get in. Big army guys.
I'll put Bulgaria on my list for next time and definitely contact you when I go. Looks like there's a lot to see there. And if you're ever in Toronto, drop me an email - we have an active group here.

OK, definitely contacting you before we leave/when we get there. In terms of the tour - we've looked into that. We're looking for something that doesn't involve a huge group of "tourists" and would let us roam around for more than an hour or two. There's so much to see and photograph that you'd have to drag me kicking and screaming out of there after such a short time. I need 2 days (?)... and we want to speak with locals, get their take on the events that happened. I'm 100% fluent in reading Ukrainian but am at the conversational level for speaking...

1) I`m not sure you can go to Chernobyl for 2-3 days with individual guide, especially walking all around making photos. You know the level of radiation is extremely high in some places, so it is forbidden to walk everywhere you want.
I know that there is a tour to Chernobyl for 2 days, but it is a public tour and you will spend a night in the hotel near Pripyat.
2)There are a lot of locals, living near Pripyat, so you can risc to make an illegal tour through the forest hiding from the guards. It is very dangerous because of the radiational level and you can get into the prison in case you will be catched. It is really dangerous, but only this way you can live with locals in their houses.
Some Ukrainian explorers do like this.
If you want I can try to find an information for you about 2-days legal and illegal tours to Pripyat.

HI Eugene,
The 2-day tour sounds fantastic. I think that would be enough time for us to shoot what we want. I understand about the radiation and we're not looking at getting sick in any way. We're happy staying within the low radiation zone.
If you could get me information about the 2-day public tour that would be excellent - we can't seem to get that info here. Not so sure I'm interested in hiking through a high radiation forest (we don't have those problems when we do UE here) or spending time in a Ukrainian jail. Although that could be an interesting experience, we only have 2 weeks to spend for our photography trip.
