Abandoned Army Airfield in Bulgaria

Hello, to you all fellow Urban Explorers!
Greetings from Bulgaria, the land of the roses.
I recently found this forum and as my first thread I'll be posting photos and the story of the Dobritch Abandoned Army Airfield...

Now a bit background of the site...
The construction of the airfield started back in the late 50's and 60's.It was
built following the Solviet war standard, next to the airfield there are a Trackor Factory, Military-Repairs Factory (both working nowadays) a Civil Aviation Base and a so called "Авио-Гарадок" (in russian "Avio-City").The "Avio-City" is built at 500-600 meters from the airfield, it's purpose was to house close the personnel and family of personnel of the base so if there was a war-time alarm all the base's personnel could reach the base fast.Nowadays there aren't any soldiers living there it's also abandoned but it is used by poor people as a place to live, so access to it is not suitable for UR...
At first the runway was only flat land, after that it was built out of solid concrete.
The atomic bunkers for the planes were built in the 70's.On the MAP, each of the bunkers for the planes is facing in a different direction, that is so because even if there was a DIRECT nuclear hit, some bunkers would survive, as they won't be hit by the blast wave straight on and the planes in those will be able to fly out even after a direct nuclear strike...Now as it is seen on the photos
the doors of the bunkers are massive...I'd say about 10 meters high and 30-35 centimetres wide...I still haven't been able to explore all the bunkers as some of them are closed from the front. Each bunker was housing one fighter get and was acting as a single unit and so had it's own power source, radio-station and commander.
There are a lot of surrounding buildings Except for the bunkers I've been to the "Light House", wich used to serve the lights of the airfield, but i don't have any photos from there, at least not yet...
The Place is enormous as you would guess, so I haven't had the time to explore all of it yet but I WILL CONTINUE TO UPDATE this thread with more pictures and ,if available, stories.
I know an interesting story about it dating back in the early 80's.
In 1982 here, in Dobrudja, there was the biggest Warsaw Pact army drill called "Щит '82" or "SHIELD '82".
First a bit of info for it...
SHIELD 82 was held between 28 September and 1 October 1982 in Bulgaria, as the fourth exercise of the SHIELD series. As the largest SHIELD exercise thus far, it included at least token participation by all Warsaw Pact members. Featuring set-piece, rehearsed demonstrations, the exercise included breakthrough and exploitation operations, airborne assaults, air and naval support of ground maneuver forces, and an amphibious landing along the coast of the Black Sea. Visiting delegations included the Ministers of National Defense from five of the Warsaw Pact nations and Mongolia, senior representatives from the other two Pact nations (Poland and Hungary), and senior military officials from Vietnam and Cuba. Although primarily for publicity and propaganda, SHIELD 82 provided the Warsaw Pact with the opportunity to improve coordination and interoperability between national forces.
Descriptors : *Warsaw Pact countries, *Military exercises, USSR, Poland, Germany(east and west), Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Airborne, Communist countries, Reconnaissance, Black Sea, Amphibious operations, Naval operations, Ground support, Ground level, Infantry, Landing, Maneuvers, Propaganda, National defense, Military operations.

Now I have also uploaded some photos of the exercise.
And i have also found some video footage from the Czech Republic national television.
Sorry for the off topic. ;)

And now to the story itself...
When the Warsaw Pack Highest ranking officer Marshal Viktor Kulikov came to the airfield for some of the exercises, some Bulgarian general told him that the base was too close to the city... (because Bulgaria, as many other countries has signed a treaty stating that military bases will be built at at least 50 kilometres from any given city) The marshal said: "Then move the city!"...
I can only imagine how important the base's position is from a strategic point of view...

I will be updating this Thread...
All the pictures will be stored HERE.
I'm posting some examples below...
My next objective is the airfield tower and i think that i'll be going in today.
I'll post new pics as soon as i can.

Nice!

Dream Explore list?

This is great info and links Badganaka! Thanks a lot and a great first post. I'm a fan of military installations (as long as they are empty) It's especially awesome to hear about the Urban planning (The town close by, moving the city, facing the bunkers different ways...)

Bunkers and airfields are great, we get to see the remnants of the other side of this struggle here in Canada. Paints a pretty vivid picture of how much tension and fear there was globally at that time. Makes for great blockbuster spy movies now...

Ha ha

This is my favorite!

So is it difficult to get into this area with the active factories near by?

That open door is just sucking you in, G.U., ain't it. Access to the site is relevantly easy. There is a road that follows the outskirts of the two factories and from there on there are about 500 metres off road, but you can get there by car.
I just got back from the site.Got caught...Some security guard caught us as we were standing in the car prior to trying to get in the airbase's tower.
He told us that last night someone tried to get in there and to steal something...It's a shame that because of people trying to steal something the guards are making our lives harder...I'm not there to steal anything...Just want to have a look arround...Nothing more...
But there were no serious consequences...He just told us to leave, because his bosses would come soon...
I will try to go back in and bribe some guard to let us in the tower...Just to have a look arround...
I've just uploaded new photos...This is the first one.
As it is seen from some of the photos there are closed bunkers and some crates
are being stored in there...I will try to get access to those in order to have a peek inside those crates.
N'joy! ;)
