The house where I first got caught.

In all the years I've been exploring, I had never met a single person at any of my locations. I've always had the fear lurking in the back of my mind that I'd meet a hobo or some squatters, but the fear usually subsided once I got into the place and started walking around. However, the uneasy feeling did not subside upon pulling up to this place. We sat in my car for a good 10 minutes or so before even deciding to get out.

We were greeted by a pile of cigarette butts and a pile of banana peels. My first remark was, "Hey! Isn't that a fresh banana peel there?!" but curiosity forced us to continue on. Walking around the side of the house there were vines growing into the windows...and a wide open front door around front. We knocked, called out, no answer. Walked in. Animal poop everywhere. Holes in the ceilings. Layers of dead bugs and cobwebs. CLEARLY no one could live here. We were first drawn upstairs, instead of into another door directly in front of us. There was a room that simply had poop in it. Another with a pair of ancient skates hanging from the wall. Another with a trunk of photographs. Then the bathroom.

This is where it gets creepy. Despite the layers of grunge that you find in every abandonment, the bathroom looked in alright shape compared to the rest of the house. And a roll of toilet paper on the sink...in half decent condition. Open the door, and there it was. The only room in the house with furniture. Mind you, everything was coated in layers of dust, even the clothing and shoes laying beside the bed (which was made). We heard a cough. Froze. Waited. Nothing. Eventually, the footsteps began. It was like being in a horror movie. Somehow, our legs began to propel us towards the front door, down the steps, around the corner.....

and there he was. Drooling and hunched over from the 60 or 70 years of life he's lived. Spewing nonsensical angry sounding words. I hid behind my boyfriend as he talked our way out of the situation...there are no real words to describe the way this old man was. It was like he was picked out of a horror film. Imagine a farmer from one of those movies, only we lived and managed to get out of the situation. Got in my car as fast as possible and took off. Laughing hysterically after the fear had worn off at the absurdity of the situation we found ourselves in...trying to figure out if he lived there and was hanging out in the part of the house we didn't check out...

1. The pile of cigarettes and banana peels

2.

3. The vines

4. Stairway inside the front door

5. See what I mean when I say clearly abandoned? This was the state of the house

6. This is a quick photo of the bed in the room where it all started...unfortunately I wasn't able to get any more photos of that room than this. There was just something horribly uneasy about that room.

I hope some of you take the time to read through this post! I put some effort into it with the whole storytelling thing

It could be that he does indeed live there and is mentally challenged, or he could be homeless. What an interesting story, thank you for sharing it.

When things like that happen (getting caught) I try to subtly turn on the video camera because nothing tells a story better than video

Oh, there was absolutely something wrong with him! I hope I didn't sound like I was mocking him or anything...he probably hasn't met a person in years judging by the state he was in (filthy clothing, drooling all over, nonsensical conversation), but I don't believe he was homeless. There was a farm nearby and he could be tending to his cows or whatever. The whole situation was what was kind of terrifying...I'd never met anyone before while exploring, plus I tend to freeze up when put in awkward situations. Thankfully the boyfriend was there to hide behind, haha.

AKBC - I really do wonder. Because he HAD to have lived there. But at the same time, it was such a gross place...but if he's lived outside of town for years and years, probably has something wrong with him, and doesn't really have any contact with other people...it's entirely possible. I think about it a lot, trying to put the pieces together. It just really makes me curious.

That's really creep shit there, good thing you weren't alone. It could have turned out worse, you never know how some people might react.

insane_dark - you have no idea how thankful i am to have had my boyfriend with me. i have no idea what i would've done - let alone what he may have done - had it just been me. plus i didn't have to say a word.

Funny you'd mention that. My boyfriend's theory is that it is not...and he won't let that theory go, either. A single room filled with poop. An unused toilet. A roll of decent toilet paper in the bathroom between the bedroom and that room. Hmm.

Ohhh my goddddd. That's so scary.
I probably would have turned back at the banana peels; you're pretty brave!
At least you got some cool pictures. I love the one of the gross pillows. Which are even gross-er now that I know someone, bum or not, puts his face on them every night.

I love how the cigarette butts are neatly separated from the banana peels.

That house isn't about 10 minutes southeast of Peterborough by any chance, is it? That photo with the vines and shutters over the windows looks really familiar.

It's very strange. Everything about it. Two separate piles, no other garbage or compost around. Does he live off of them?? And why pile them up outside of the garage/shack/mini barn thing that comes off the side of the house?

bandi - I sent you a PM.

Something to consider...

if this man is mentally ill or otherwise in a position where he is not able to maintain his home, it could very well be that the plumbing has been off for years. Naturally the toilet wouldn't flush and he'd have to excrete elsewhere.

If it were local and he were the genuine homeowner, I'd probably venture out just to leave a bag inside the doorway with some toilet paper, non-perishable food, juice, etc.

Edit: oh and hand sanitizer

Heyyy!

Awesome story, Drooling you say? That's wild. I can't believe nobody's mentioned that he might be senile yet...(Unless I missed it) That's highly likely. As entertaining as it is in it's early stages (Where my 90 year old gram is right now) It really sucks later on. That's unfortunate.

Intrinsic is right, it would be a sweet thing to do to take him out something nice. Probably good karma haha. Old people like Werthers originals and Fishermans Friends...

Despite the short set you have great pics there, I like the one with the stairs lots of light coming down...Cobwebs, the whole 'creepy old house' nine yards.

Right good job there lady.

Thats a great story, shadowedsmile. I wonder if id step any further if i saw fresh banana peels near an abandoned house. Intrisic's idea is great by the way...

as a kid there was some creepy lot with a blue shed on it, not far from where i lived. My mom didnt want me to go there. I thought there was someone living in there, but later i learned that person was dead : Actually the guy's sons had a dispute because they thought there was money hidden on the property and only one of the sons inherited from him, or something like that. I learned that short before the place was destroyed, but i wouldnt have gone there anyway as i was way too scared. my mom never been really good at telling stories, even today i dont quite get all of it when she tries.

Edit : when you say there was something creepy about the bedroom, do you think this might be due to the old men still using it, i mean... maybe you felt you were in someone's space at this time

Seriously drooling. Like large gobs hanging out of his mouth. I do feel bad for him, as you, Intrinsic, etc have mentioned. And the nonsensical speak was probably because he was so confused. If I wasn't terrified of going back there I'd leave him a note apologizing for intruding and some of the essentials (toilet paper, Werthers, some cigarettes...). I noticed in the bedroom there was also a portable fireplace, so that may be what he used for heat. And maybe he enjoys the company of the animals we heard in the ceiling.

Glad you liked the story/photos. I feel like they almost got the idea of just how damned creepy that place was. Old man or not, it was a hell of a house. There's a few more photos on Flikr if you wanted to check them out when you're back to faster internet. I just posted the best few and the ones that went with what I was explaining.

Thanks! Like I said, I hesitated again...but curiosity got the best of me, plus the condition of the place. Interesting story you have...it's funny how when we are young we sometimes come up with situations like that in our head as to why our parents don't want us going there. Logical explanations don't usually come to mind, such as you are out of your parents' view, or it's not yours to look at.

It could have been a feeling like that...like I was intruding into someone's space. Mixed with starting to hear things other than animals once we entered...I can't properly explain the vibe that house had. I'm not one to go and say places are haunted or anything, but there was just something really uneasy about that place. Maybe there's a reason (assuming he does live there) that the majority of the house is left to rot away and is unused? I wish I could go and ask him, lol.

My boyfriend said "His eyes tell stories that you or I couldn't imagine" I bet it really would be interesting to sit down and listen to how he ended up where he is, and where his wife/children are...

I'm not sure where this is but you might like report the guy to local health office or even the police. he obviously is living in conditions that are not only unsanitary but he obviously has some issues and needs some kind of help.

It's hard to say, maybe he just stays there sometimes? I mean, he was dirty, but not I haven't bathed in years dirty. Maybe the house was nicer in the part that I didn't get to see? Shouldn't he have some sort of family? If he's always got bananas and cigarettes he does get away from the house, and it was in a rural area so it would be a bit of a distance to a store.

Yeah, I just assumed that maybe his family lived nearby, but obviously the guy has problems that aren't being looked after. That's not to say the state can do any better, its just sad.
