in memory of the Ypsilanti Center for Forensic Psychiatry

In my junior year of high school, I went on my very first urban exploration with a couple friends. I lived in Saline, about seven miles away from the old Ypsilanti Center for Forensic Psychiatry, which had been replaced with a new, modern building.
The first time I visited, it was February and there were spots of snow on the ground. There was a security guard that drove around the perimeter of the building, but the large number of trees made it very easy to hide until he was out of sight. We ran in right through the front door. I almost started to cry when I realized that my camera's battery had been left at home and I had completely forgotten my camera phone.
Half of the building looked like someone had dropped it into the ocean or something, completely destroyed. The other half just looked vacant. All kinds of amazing stuff was left behind, like wheel chairs, primitive electronics, even some files of the patients.
My favorite room was definitely the kitchen, which was completely intact, except for the peeling paint. The windows allowed the sunset to shine in and light up the whole room gold.
Another highlight of our visit was sitting on the roof and watching the security guard circle.
We wandered around for about an hour or so before heading back.
I went again later on, this time remembering to bring my camera. I had my car and parked at a nearby gas station.
I have no idea why I only took a couple of pictures. I beat myself up for that all the time, and it was so long ago that I can't remember whether it was just stupidity or if my battery died.
When we got back to my car, we saw a police officer and freaked out. He yelled at us for a while but eventually calmed down and explained that he was only looking out for our well-being, because "unsavory characters" made the hospital their home. At sixteen years old, he held me responsible for my friends (who didn't have their IDs on them) because I was the driver. He left us with, "I don't want to find you guys out here again."
And he didn't. About two weeks later, they erected a fence around the perimeter. A few months later, they tore the building down to make way for a Toyota factory.
I parked my car on the street with my forty-year-old Canon and my telephoto lens and took photos of the bulldozers digging into the floor. Unfortunately, upon developing the photos, I discovered that my camera had a light leak. This place really hated getting its picture taken... ;)

The place had a weird history as well. It was the first place where a new vaccination (that's still used today, but I forgot what it was) was used. One reporter described that they had dug up some old records from the building and found that they had tested a new vaccination on what was actually recorded as "volunteers" - with quotation marks. They had also used the classic "remedies" to mental maladies, like electroshock therapy and a treatment that included wrapping patients in freezing cold wet blankets. It was a very eerie feeling, knowing how many people were essentially tortured in the place.

Anyway, I think that's enough of a word wall for you guys. It was a very memorable first couple of explorations, to say the least.

Sun,

Thanks for the writeup. You are a talented writer.

I can understand your frustration from forgetting batteries and pics not turning out, but it's called 'live and learn.'
