| | | | | Last-minute call for suggestions - Gary, IN < on 5/29/2009 5:21 AM >
| | | Hey all - so, my friend and I will be traveling from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Noblesville/Indianapolis IN tomorrow, then catching a NIN show on Saturday. Which leaves lots of time to do some urbexing on the way! We'll be going right through Gary, which has been on my list of places to explore for quite some time. I've seen pictures of the church, train station, and an insanely beautiful theater. What I'm looking for is anyone's suggestions on good places to go (directions would be fantastic), tips on safety, or if any saints are out there, possibly a tour guide! Gary seems rife with opportunities for beautiful urban shots. Thanks in advance, fellow explorers!

| | | I like the Palace Theater better than Gary Methodist. I know a lot of people swear by Gary Methodist, but the Palace has much more photographic potential IMHO. Oh, and in regards to safety, you should be fine -- we never ran into issues over there, even in the worst parts of detroit, the people were the friendliest I've met. I'm not saying it'll always happen, and I don't recommend going at night, but yeah, it should be a safe area to 'splore. [last edit 5/29/2009 5:35 AM by tunnelbug - edited 1 times]

But, the church is still definitely worth the visit! Just be aware that they're filming the next "Nightmare on Elm St." movie around there currently. Be cautious.
I only listen to 104.7 Poop. I'm always in deep shit, so I may as well listen to poop. |

| | | In addition to those already mentioned, I enjoyed the post office as well. the auditorium was worth a quick peek. there's so many spots, you won't have a hard time keeping busy.

| | | Well, we're back in MKE for now but we did stop through Gary and get to visit some amazing places. Had to limit it to 3 this trip, but we will definitely be back. Didn't have any run-ins safety-wise, everything was pretty abandoned even by squatters (figured it was at least marginally safer in daylight). We saw the church (no evidence of the taping, they must have cleared out fast), someone had spray painted "Freddy Krueger was here" on a wall. Also went by the Palace Theater and the Train Station. We hope to visit a high school, the post office (we went by it but again, ran out of time), and the Ambassador on our next excursion. Will be editing photos this evening and hopefully getting them on flickr by tonight or tomorrow so feel free to take a peek (especially you NIN or Jane's fans out there, I'll have concert photos as well). Much thanks to everyone who posted here and offered suggestions and help!!

Man! You should know that one. I could almost go hoarse yelling it out loud, even though everyone knows about it [last edit 6/3/2009 8:26 AM by tunnelbug - edited 3 times]

| My sarcasm didn't come through on that one. With the end of this school year, they (the city) will be closing several more schools. As badly as they're hurting for money, another offer to buy the high school was turned down.
