|  | | | I decided to visit the Courtice Water Pollution Control Plant to see what happens to my pee and poop once I flush the toilet.
The CWPCP was opened in 2008 at a cost of over $170 million and handles waste water treatment from east Oshawa, Courtice, west Bowmanville and parts of York Region. This is a small treatment plant. The one in Pickering next to the nuke plant is double or triple the size of the Courtice location.
Intitially, water is introduced and big items like tampons, condoms, toilet paper and other inorganic waste is filtered out. The resulting dried-out waste is then sent to a landfill. The slightly cleaner water is then sent to a series of skimmer tanks where heavy metals and goop like oil is caught. Apparently restaurants are infamous for pouring their grease trap into their drains, which flows here and takes extra effort to remove.
The next tanks involve separating tiny metals by introducing iron particles to the water. Yet even more skimming is done and then the water is treated in a chlorine tank then the chlorine is neutralized by another chemical and sent to an outflow a mile or so off the Lake Ontario shoreline, where it is clean and will not affect nature.
Drains on your street are not delivered here, instead they get channeled to the nearest creek and into the lake, totally untreated. So be mindful what you put in those drains...
Underneath all the series of processing tanks is a tunnel that workers can use to access all the machinery involved, in a temperature controlled setting. It was incredible to see how long these tunnels are. Despite it being a smaller treatment plant, I was very impressed with the computer automated system and overall design.

| | | | Ughh, it was pretty bad, though not nearly as bad as your imagination would deliver. The private waste management company across the 401 emits a narsty odur which if you're driving on the freeway at Courtice Rd, you definitely smell it. Durham/York want to put their controversial waste incinerator next to the water treatment plant, so expect to see all sorts of bad and toxic gasses coming out of south Courtice soon.

It certainly is UE. I went on a tour, separated from the group and wandered around.
Oh and the facility is very lightly staffed as it is primarily automated.
