A portal to Hell it is not, haunted it is probably not, an Al Capone hang-out it might have been...

The Maribell (sic) Caves Hotel in Maribel is, despite what you hear, a rather peaceful little stone building, not hard to find, not hard to access. We went during on Easter Sunday 2009 and it could not have been more picturesque. It is only a few hundred feet off of the highway, surrounded by a wooden plank fence. Despite the numerous NO TRESSPASSING signs, it looks like a tourist trap.

All that remains is the stone shell of the building. One wall, about a floor up, still have a carved fireplace one it. There is some graffiti, although most seems to come from the owner. "GET OUT" tags one wall. The wooden parts of the building burned up in the mid-80's, although from what I've heard the debris was still inside the place as recently as a few years ago.

I have only seen it in the daylight, but I can imagine that under a full moon the whole thing would glow, which may explain some of the urban myths surrounding the place. There is no evidence to suggest, however, that anyone was actually killed there, let alone the dozens of people some Internet posts claim. Al Capone was rumored to have enjoyed the natural spring water spa, however.

You can get there by going North on I42, taking the Maribel exit, turning RIGHT (the sign will point you to the left), and then following the signs for Maribel Caves Park. The hotel is about 1/4 mile past the park entrance. You can't miss it.

A few more pics of the hotel as well as another building which might have been a stable.

That's a great location! You know any history on why it closed down, or why it still is sitting there?

It was built in 1900 nearby a natural mineral water spring (which still functions). It was spa/resort type place. There was a bottling plant on site for a while which bottled the spring water for hotels in Chicago and Milwaukee. I'm not sure when it closed down. There used to a lot more of the "guts" of the building inside, evidently with some furniture and books, as recently as a few years ago. It is now totally hollow inside. There was a large pile of debris on the grounds of the property which might have been pulled out from inside the place. I have no clue why it is still standing. Obviously the owners do not want people nosing around, but it is soooo inviting from the road. It would make sense to cave it in and be done with it. I can't imagine there are any plans for the building, I'm not even sure it would be possible to renovate it.

Cool.

"No Trespassing" but we'll build some nice concrete stairs for you so you can access the building easily without getting your tourist clothes dirty.

Watch out for the neighbor to the lefthand side. He doesnt like people on the property. I know from firsthand experience

I heard about a month ago there may be plans to tear the motel down. This would be a shame..

i think there's always been some type of plan to tear the place down- I hear that it's been taken down all the time, when it's clearly still standing. Sooner or later though, it too will go.

I've heard the same thing about that guy. This is why, if you notice, all the photos are taken from the right side of the property. The Manitowoc County Historical Society sometimes includes the hotel on a driving tour they do, although I am sure if it just a pass-by.
