| | | Arggggggggggggggggg! Damn Union Pacific, they're tearing down every thing, every where. That building should have been preserved!

| | | Indeed. I really regret never going inside now. There were always Union Pacific vehicles parked all around so I never really tried very hard.

| | | Yeah, this one brings a lump to my throat. This was one of my favorite locations. And really a very historic building on top of that.

| | | I don't understand UP justifying the expense of tearing this down. What a waste of money... What could they possibly do with the land?

| | | In postings on dallasmetropolis.com about transportation issues, UP is frequently noted as a roadblock to progress. They just don't seem to play well with others, whether it's a complex interaction like sharing with passenger rail, or a seemingly-simple question of putting a bridge over the rail yard. I think NTTA (North Texas Tollway Authority) is going to spend something like $90 million *extra* on the Fort Worth SW Tollway project, just for the "privilege" of building an overpass over the UP rail yard. A bunch of that money goes directly to Union Pacific itself, in the form of rail yard upgrades. One poster in the discussion puts it this way: "You can't spell stUPid without UP." That sounds like something my sixth-grader would say, but it certainly speaks to a level of frustration.

| | | Yeah, it was one (munitions factory) during Vietnam after its days as a Engine Shop were over. [last edit 5/11/2009 10:35 PM by Bustedknuckle - edited 1 times]

I knew that had been reported, but I never did find anything to verify it. BK probably knows. My next door neighbor is a retired MKT employee. Mayhem, I don't know why UP would spend the money to tear these buildings down. I could see it maybe if they needed the space for some new building or something, but I know that location, they're not going to do anything with the space, not right now anyway. So why spend the money to tear it down? The more I think about this one, the worse I feel about it.

| | | I had always heard the bomb factory story from my Dad. I assumed it was WWII, not Vietnam. During WWII the military opened the Bluebonnet Ordnance Plant in nearby McGregor, so I think I was confusing the two. [last edit 5/12/2009 4:34 AM by mayhem154 - edited 1 times]

| | | No Problem... I just confirmed the company that manufactured the bomb casing there was A.O. Smith. The Waco plant was open for about 10 years. They make water heaters, but have had their hands in a lot of government and automotive industry contracts over the years.

| | | For any of you who are rail buffs and are interested, I found a link today to a very well made video of the history of the Katy shop in Waco that was torn down. Its sad if you are like me and get nostalgic about this sort of thing, but the video is well made and interesting. It was put together by WCCC-TV in Waco in 2008. http://www.waco-te...-wardens-shop.html
