Prior to the 1906 earthquake, the house had been built up to seven stories tall, but today it is only four stories. The house is predominantly made of redwood frame construction, with a floating foundation that is believed to have saved the estate from total collapse in both the 1906 earthquake and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. There are about 160 rooms, including 40 bedrooms and two ballrooms, one completed and one under construction. The house also has 47 fireplaces, 10,000 window panes, 17 chimneys (with evidence of two others), two basements and three elevators. Winchester's property was some 162 acres (650,000 m²) at one time, but now the estate is just 4.5 acres (24,000 m²) — the minimum necessary to contain the house and nearby outbuildings. It has gold and silver chandeliers and inlaid parquet floors and trim. There are doors and stairways that lead nowhere and a vast array of colors and materials. Before the availability of elevators, special "easy riser" stairways were installed to allow Winchester access to every part of the mansion, to accommodate her severe arthritis. Roughly 20,500 gallons (76,000 liters) of paint were required to paint the house. Due to the sheer size of the house, by the time every section of the house was painted, the workers had to start repainting again.

The house also has many conveniences that were rarely found at the time of its construction, including steam and forced-air heating, modern indoor toilets and plumbing, push-button gas lights, a hot shower from indoor plumbing and even three elevators, including one with the only horizontal hydraulic elevator piston in the United States.

okay, seriously, i can sometimes forgive people for using "UER" as the proper abbreviation. in-fact, that would indicate someone wants to urban exploration resource something. its okay, people do say "UE it" occasionally, so its understandable that someone would make the mistake of saying "UER it." usually people dont make that mistake twice because people throw a fit.

but seriously, what the FUCK does "UEA" stand for?

Yes it is. You can Google info about her, she is heir to the Winchester arms fortune. The house and grounds are very impressive and worth the tours.

By today's standards, she was a crazy batshit lady, but when you are rich, even craziness holds a certain level of respect and control.

There are 3 general tours: the house, garden, and "hard hat" tour. The hard hat tour will give you a glimpse of the floating foundation system. During certain times of the year, flashlight tours are given. You only tour about 40% of the actual house. The construction stopped when she died, so many rooms are unfinished. It's a neat time capsule of the construction methods back then.

I went to that house once back in... I think it was '99. I'm not one much to freak out over orbs in pictures or paranormal stuff, but that place creeped me out to the point I will never go back. (alone)

I had pictures but I'm not sure where they went. That was before digital cameras were the big thing and I think I had a Pentax 35mm. There was some weird stuff that showed up in the video I took, though.

I've lived in the south bay all my life and not once have I had the urge to visit that money-sucking tourist trap. That's exactly what it is....a tourist attraction. There are billboards for it along major highways as far as the central valley on I-5. All the locals know it as a "waste of time and money"....just like it was for Sara Winchester.

The legend says that for every death caused by a Winchester rifle, Sara Winchester had to build a room on her home to accommodate the soul. So she never stopped building. And now the house is opened for daily guided tours. The property is landlocked by a busy interstate freeway, sits right across the street from a giant ritzy shopping plaza, and right next door to a massive Century theater complex. I'm not sure how much they can "expand" the place, but every time I pass by, there are gardeners in front, tourist cars parked in the lot, and kids running around waiting to be led on a tour that will hardly give them nightmares or even an urge to go take a piss.

I can't even believe that someone put an LDB entry for it on this site.

And to think, it was almost demolished to make way for the 280 Freeway in the late 60's.

When I grew up in San Jose, I had a GF as a summer tour guide adn a friend who was a janitor. I did go on a walk with him and her during off hours and it is more intense without 50 people crowding you out.

I think in the whole time I lived there, I went there 3 times. I do wish it wasn't so touristy.

I went. I thought it was fun. I probably wouldn't do it again. I can imagine how creepy it must be without the tour, in the dark and the ability to wander wherever you want... its a really intriguing story, which I think adds to the experience of the tour.

Id rather that insane "house" be there than a freeway...personally.

UEA poor usage of an acronym I guess. UEA=(Urban Exploration Activities) loL!
Just my 2 cents worth that depreciates every second. Lol!

I was wondering if anyone as tried to UEA the rest of the building that is not normally accessed by the public. That would be the cool. Or we might even find the Mysterious Winchester women still living in the rest of the 60% of the building that the public never sees. I dont know whats more challenging UEA here or a nuclear power plant. LoL!

When I say tour 40%, I mean you walk through 40% of the rooms, but with all the interior doorways, windows, skylites, railings, and unfinished rooms, you see a good 90% of the house. What you miss are closets, small pantrys, storerooms, and a large unfinished section, which you can see through a glass door, and maybe the occasional secret, but insignificant room. All the weird architectural stuff that the house is noted for is on the tour. The hardhat tour will cover some storerooms, where original building materials are stored. This stuff is new old stock, a house restorer's dream.

Another fact: all the furniture is not original. The house was cleaned out after she dies, and for a time in the 20 and 30's, it was "abandoned".

It wouldn't be hard to bust from your tour group and go off exploring, but the house is not as maze like and people claim, you will certainly run into another tour in a short time.
