Footage is from both the 1/11 and 3/14 visits.

JCPenney Second Floor:

"Unused Footage" (new title pending) from "Abandoned Paradise" and "Dixie Square II"
http://www.youtube...atch?v=GiT8VN_lwl0

One of these days I'll have to go back again, have to see it with all the trees and such growing inside.

Enjoy.

I enjoyed watching the JCPenney video. I'm always terrified of being above ground in places thinking that the floor might collapse at any moment.

Thanks!

The first time I went up there as I made my way onto the sales floor towards the escalator I had to pause because I began hearing a "pop" noise every couple of seconds, as if something was banging against the girders. I kept saying to myself "be ready to run..." The small hole by the escalator I think surprised me more.

Heh, my dad was a Round Lake Beach cop for 21 years. There's a couple of houses on Rollin's Road by Thornton's he says have been abandoned for several years.

Hmmm... those abandoned houses might just give me a reason to go see my dad. Lol.

I think he's about 5 min. away from the Thornton's on Rollins.

Here is the house in StreetView. There were a couple more abandoned houses right next door to it that were bulldozed recently for the Advance Auto Parts store. This one still remains, with crazy plant overgrowth in front. Not sure if the For Sale sign is still there or not.

I have posted a second "Unused Footage" video to YouTube. This is the original version, the one posted prior is a shortened version of this. Please enjoy.

Got any good tips for anyone interested in checking out the mall? I've been wanting to go check it out for awhile but I've never been out that way before so I don't know anything about it.

LOL...I am all too familiar with that "small" hole by the escalator in which you speak of. I am pretty known in the DSM forums as the person who fell in the escalator shaft. It's pretty deep and full of nasty, cold water. MY other leg caught something while falling so luckily I only ended being waist deep in it. My leg managed to survive despite a long scrape from rusty tetanus infested metal.

Be careful not to enter on the northwest side of the mall because the police station sits on the property. Entry is easy as walking into your own bathroom, but wear waterproof shoes if you can. The place is constantly covered in water and all the asbestos tiles on the floor make it feel like walking on wet Wonder Bread. Also, don't attempt to go to the 2nd floor of the JCPenneys anymore. It's quickly falling onto the 1st floor. Not much remains. Rebar, concrete, and steel trussed structures aren't as safe as one would seem. I've learned that. There's really not much to see in there anymore. Pretty much all signage and artifacts have been removed over the past few years. There is a feeling of nostalgia in there for some I suppose...

I remember that story, that was one of the stories brought up among the group I was with on the January visit. But the hole I'm talking about is a small hole forming in the second floor just to the right when you get to the top of the escalator closest to the mall. I didn't get a shot of it, but it's visible at the 4:11 mark in one of my videos:

They used some real thin concrete for the second floor of Penneys, and yes it is in real bad shape. Supposedly more concrete has fallen since my last visit in March, and it's right now looking very unlikely that I will be going up there again.

Ha.
Damn, that hole definitely wasn't there the visit I fell in the escalator shaft. The upstairs was actually in decent shape back in 2005. Well, decent compared to now. There were no holes or chunks fallen to the first floor at least. I still can't believe we climbed the escalator because...well those who have been there...no about a different way. That's the way we ended up coming down. Got creepy vibes in that area...like that's where the crimes were committed. Caught some possible orbs in those shots. I don't really believe in all that, but I've had a few weird instances where it's made me question things.
In June of this year when I went back, I couldn't believe how much of the 2nd floor was laying on the ground. I'm glad I got to explore it while it was still intact. I wonder if the huge office safe has fallen through yet.
