I was driving on a back road in Athens County along the Hocking River looking for old abandoned houses, which seem to populate the area I was in, when I came across this:

I'm assuming it's a stage, but I'm not 100% sure. the pic below is one of the set, the rest are on the link above.

Interesting. I grew up in Athens, and I heard a lot of rumors from local hippies about secret Grateful Dead shows that took place out in the country in the old days. My guess is this stage is more recent though, probably from some kind of "spring weekend" party for OU students.

A hangar for a mini airship? That's bizarre!

Could it be a drive in movie screen frame?

I think it's newer as well. It's about 25 miles-ish from Athens, closer to the Washington County line. All I know is theres a dirt track near it with a similar light stand. This place doesn't look like it's been used for a couple years.

I find it quite amusing to find such things in places in which you would never expect them.

The Dead only played Athens once, in November of '68, and it was at Memorial Auditorium. Their travels are very well documented, so I would be very surprised if they ever played any "secret" shows in Athens. "Springfest" ended in 1992. That might actually be the site where ekoostik Hookah holds their Hookah in the Hills fests every fall. Haven't been to one yet, so I don't know for sure. Is it near Coolville?

Sorry to be a nitpicker. I'm a Deadhead and can't help it.

It's just before Coolville, if you're coming from Belpre.

No problem, I was just kidding anyway--you hear a lot of weird stuff growing up in SE Ohio... for instance, my dad claims to have gone to the Mem Aud show and then stood in line behind the band at a burger place afterward...

Anyway, sorry to bring us further off topic.
