Monson?

I'm trying to be real careful here and word this correctly as not to give anything away or feel like I'm inquiring for too much information.

Have any of you been to the old Monson State Hospital? Back in High School(way back in the early 80s ) Some kids would dare each other to go in and to prove they were brave enough to venture in they would steal some sort of shirt or something and wear it to school the next day. I am no condoning this action just stating what they did and this was years ago. I have heard they will arrest you on site if you set one foot on this place now but then I also heard of someone venturing out and taking photos without any problems at all.

I was just wondering if any of you have explored this place, I didn't see it on the UE Database but then I'm only a basic member at the moment too. HA! I said "member" just trying to lighten things up.
Thanks!
Joe

I also heard a rumor that the functioning Monson State Developmental Center is coming down too, well at least a few of the buildings anyway.

Here is the deal with Monson. There are a few small structures on the main campus that are abandoned, and then a few more across the street in the woods.

Is it worth it? To me it's something to stop by after if i'm exploring Belchertown but i wouldn't plan a trip just around that place.

I've went ahead and added Monson to the UE DB for ya urbanjoe with a set of photos from one of the buildings on the main campus......

Have fun, it's not a bad place to check out if your in the area.

Cool thank you very much!! I was more just curious than anything because I had heard a lot about this place growing up. I appreciate the photos, I won't be back in that area for a while but will be visiting at some point over the next year or so.
Thanks again!!

Hmm. Yeah, Monson is pretty lame. It's not a terrible place to explore and definitely not the most disappointing place I've explored, but it's really nothing special. If you're in the area, though, you might as well give it a go. The worst that can happen if you get spotted taking photos on the active side of the campus is that security (which only seems to be around at night) will tell you that you need to seek permission from the center's administration to take photos, and then ask you to leave. If you're caught on the other side of the campus...well, you probably won't be, because it's in the woods and no one goes up there.

Ah, thanks for clearing up a question I've had for quite some time.

A friend of mine (who is a guard) was traveling with some inmates. Somehow Belchertown was brought up and my friend said a couple of the inmates talked about "the hospital down the street". I'm thinking now this could be Monson.

One of them said there was a hallway in the basement where ankle and wrist shackles were attached to the wall with chains. Don't know how valid those claims are.

I used to live in close proximity to both locations, so I've done Monson a few times and Belchertown more times than I can even remember, and I know for a fact that I've seen nothing like that at either location. The creepiest thing in the basement at Monson is a mangled CPR dummy. As for Belchertown -- well, there's nothing even remotely creepy about it.

And to clear it up, I believe that what one of the clients was referring to as "the hospital down the street" is Monson -- it's pretty much a straight shot south from Belchertown center, maybe 10 minutes away.

For shits and giggles ... what was the most disappointing place you explored?

*edit* Because I asked I might as well share mine first. For me it was my EPIC FAILURE thread, though we had fun; losing one location, not doing prior research properly, and finding the trapdoor closed was certainly the most disheartening day yet.

Hmm. Honestly, and I'm probably going to get jumped all over for this, but I'd have to say that it was the clocktower at Worcester State Hospital. I went there the other day for the first time and was incredibly disappointed. It didn't suck too, too bad, but it wasn't what I expected or wanted it to be. The wings of the kirk were much better.

I went around 6pm, so it was still light out. I explored the wings last summer before demo was completed, and maybe the clocktower would have been better if there was something else to off-set it. But it definitely wasn't what I thought it was going to be. Still gorgeous on the outside though.

We're never gonna see anything like it again. The inside is burnt as hell and takes less then 5 mins to explore. Not worth the risk

When I went there, I saw that fucker in the dark, from behind, and thought it was a dead homeless person.

But yeah, definitely not worth it unless you're in the general area. Not worth more than a 30 minute drive, in my opinion. The "security" there is pretty nice. Depending on who's driving around, they'll let you go in. There's some woman that's in charge of the place that you can actually ask for permission to shoot inside the buildings (I told her I was doing a "school project" one time and she told me I had an hour). There's a guy that's in charge when she's away- don't bother with him. He won't give you permission (he said people have rituals there and shit...whatever, pal).

Scene kids need to get AIDS. LOTS of it.

This thread turned out really informative thanks for the replies! That dummy would have freaked the hell out of me if I didn't know what(who) it was. I have a friend who lives in Monson just a couple minutes away so thought maybe I'd check it out if I got the chance next time I'm visiting, whatever though either way, but seeing as I have never really explored any "cooler" abandonments might be a good "first time" place to go.
Thanks you'all rawk yo!

Hey thanks Duffy! you know I'm most likely going to be moving back to the Bay State next year. I've been in Los Angeles 12 years and it's time to head home. I don't miss winter but I've dealt with it before. I am most definitely going to take you up on your offer at some point once I'm settled. I'm moving to the Natick/Framingham-ish area.

That photo is the Mason Mill Ruins in Decatur/Atlanta GA. I believe it's in the database it's a pretty easy exploration it's more like a "park" with old mill ruins in it. Pretty cool still though I put some more photos up a while back here

when we were there, security came up to us while were just walking around and brought us back to headquarters and called the cops and made us wait there for them and then questioned us separately. well, not me, cause i'm a girl and i don't matter.

also, using this as a stop on the way to belchertown is like using it as a shitty stop on the way to a very, very slightly less shitty stop. just sayin'
