Paris?

Hey all,

A couple friends and I are taking a trip to Germany and Paris in three weeks. I really wanted to see some interesting things in Paris, including the catacombs. Has anyone ever been there or have any connections there. A tour guide would be mighty nice...

If a tour's what you're after the public catacombs are well worth a look. Additionally there is a tour of the paris sewers as well. I haven't bothered with it since there is usually better stuff to be found.

You don't need a guide. Really.

English Map:

http://exploration...aphies/indexus.htm

Take 3 light sources and plenty of water. Waders are more trouble than they're worth. Say "bonsoir" to the people you pass. I'm sure someone or another will show you how to get in - or just walk around the Petit Censure until you find the hole.

Best English write-up I know of is here: http://pxt.in/episodes/paris-catacombs/

Lots of pictures and words and such under "Secrets of the City of Light" here: www.allcitynewyork.com/Projects

Notre Dame, Grand Palais, Petit Palais, Patheon, Eiffel Tower, Bastille, St Sulpice (popular amongst DaVinci code fans), http://en.wikipedi...tractions_in_Paris

Thanks. I did post in the English section on CKZone, but no one seems to want to reply. And I did look up some places in Paris. But since we only have a limited time, and I am guessing Paris is fairly big, it would be nice to have a friendly face there...

Yeah, afterall, it's only 300 km of tunnels on multiple levels, accessible by an always changing network of manholes that get welded on a weekly basis.

Why bother with a guide, really? After all, it's dark, 30 meter under street level, sometimes flooded with water, with constantly changing points of access, a special police unit dedicated to patroling the place and lots of stucked passageways through which you need to crawl.

As an experienced cataphile myself that also is a guide and brings "tourists" to the catacombs, I tend to give a load of crap to "tourists" and first timers I walk by in there, especially the ones going down without a guide or, as I have seen it many times, a paper copy on 8 x 11 piece of paper of a map that should be viewed at 4 feet x 4 feet. That's pure stupidity. Plus, you won't enjoy it.

Yeah, go ahead, you don't need a guide *rolls her eyes*

You info proves my point. Petite Ceinture is what you are referring to. If you can't even name the proper, most well-known access point to the network, it definitely demonstrate you do need a guide!

Yeah, there is no way I would go down there without a guide. I'd still be down there to this day, hopelessly lost... and dead.

So even today there are new additions to these century old catacombs?

PS - Mostly any location is Paris is UE, unless you live there, plus most of them are tourist attractions and "I got lost" is a better excuse than "i found a way in"

maZe would know better than I, but I think it would be more correct to say that the new tunnels aren't being added, but that various sections get closed off, or re-opened, or re-discovered... and various entrances do as well.

Exactly. Things, passageways, corridors and what is accessible is not changes regularly.
