Historic hospital building in jeopardy

A local developer is making a bid to renovate the Wisconsin Memorial Hospital, built in 1922 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The State is prepared to spend money to demolish the Hospital and so far the situation is in limbo.

Demolition was approved by the state even though the Hospital is in a Historic district and adjacent to native American burial grounds and any new uses for construction on the site are very limited. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The developer wants to turn the Hospital into a drug rehab facility at no cost to the State, which to me seems to be a no brainer. The State pays nothing and retains an Historic Hospital building which would be silly to raze!

This Hospital has sat vacant for 15 years. I have never been inside of it but can tell you the State has facilities here going back to when wisconsin was first a state in 1848. The grounds are near lakes and marshes, and the whole area is pretty creepy. There are many different buildings and Hospitals and facilities, open or secured, and the complex is connected in parts by pre 1900 era underground tunnels which are impossible to access. I am sure there are tons of stories about creepy things that happened here, but I know of none.

I have often looked at pictures and read about explorations done in some of the bigger old state hospitals out East and thought thouse would be awesome to see up close. I know better than to try to run through the Mendota area because it has its own security and all buildings in use are alarmed or worse. It is enormous in scale and always intrigued me. A dead hospital is on my list of places I have not explored and want to!

Picture of the Hospital building in question.

I don't know if you saw the article in the State Journal but it appears that the site may be developed instead of demolished, still up in the air. I have been curious about this site as well. If you live in the Madison area maybe we can figure out a way to get a look inside.
