Janesville WIsconsin GM plant permanently closing this week

Janesville (AP) - Production at the General Motors plant in Janesville is scheduled to end for good this week.

GM spokesman Christopher Lee says operations at the southern Wisconsin plant will cease Thursday.

About 1,200 employees were let go just before Christmas when GM ended SUV production at the plant.

Some 100 workers were retained to finish an order of small- to medium-duty trucks for Isuzu Motors Ltd.

Lee says most of those workers will be laid off Thursday. He says others will be kept on to help guide the plant's shutdown.

GM's long-term future remains in doubt. Chief Executive Fritz Henderson says the automaker may file for bankruptcy if it can't meet the strict requirements that came with $13.4 billion in government loans.

The 4.8 million-square-foot facility began as a tractor assembly plant in 1919 and has been at the center of the Wisconsin town, 100 miles northwest of Chicago, and one of a series of manufacturing centers in the area, including Rockford and Belvidere, Illinois and Beloit, Wisconsin.

Permanently is a pretty big nail in that particular concrete coffin. I suspect this complex will sit and rot behind barbed-wire fences. My feeling is that unless another automaker takes the facility it will slowly decay like a lot of things have in Janesville.

Some workers will stay on for a time at the GM plant to help shut it down. Eventually this location will become a cast off shell owned by an absentee landlord and another testimony to the power of nature to reclaim everything in time.

This is a very large location which always resembled a huge battleship to me.

I'm expecting it to be a while before it's fully shut down and left to sit, and security (if there will be any) will be slacking enough to be able to get inside.

Just need a little patience...

They're also closing down a Land-O-Lakes plant not too far from here, and a cardboard plant:

give it a while, and there should be more soon.

Janesville has not improved since your last visit, that I know for sure.

My partner grew up in Rockford nearby and both cities as well as Beloit are seeing rough times with industry shutting down or moving out.

I would like to scout out those cities more in the hope of finding some hidden gems in the countryside. As far as the GM plant, I would not be too eager just yet, it will take some time to do the closure and the facility is likely already secured and will remain guarded somehow.

The one thing I remember when I first saw the plant when I was younger was the sign on the parking lot that forbade any vehicle that was not GM made from parking in the employee lot!

That sign if I remember right was more a gag as Janesville was pretty proud of their work.

It wouldn't surprise me if GM ends up reduces the building size to handle other types of production then re-opens it. That plant is only huge because it did SUVs and trucks. If it was half the size (which could be easily done; the plant is basically a bunch of additions put together. GM I know used to lease out plants once they were gutted with the clause of they can kick you out if they want to restart production, but I think that was with smaller plants.

If GM folds this place might well end up in receivership and possibly to the govt, GM will strip it bare and try to sell it off or subdivide it somehow.

This place is HUGE and easily found on Google maps.

Lake Mills is cool! I love Aztalan, tho it always bothered me how it was looted bare and razed, and had to be rebuilt as it "was". Have you heard of the pyramid in the lake?

Looks like the Janesville plant isn't the only one. Saw on the news yesterday most of the GM plants are going to be closed for the summer. Have fun!

Announced this week - this location is kaput forever as far as GM is concerned.

The plant was in the running to be the new GM facility to produce some new vehicle, but lost out in a bid war to Michigan.

"The plant is technically on "stand by" status and GM might bring production back in 2011 if business improves, said Douglas Venable, Janesville's economic development director, but city officials may encourage the automaker to sell so other businesses can bring in jobs"
