| | | | Custom weather alert system for dense fog < on 4/21/2009 12:37 AM >
| | | So I'm trying to find some kind of service that will alert me when any place within about a 40 mile radius of where I live has extremely low visibility due to fog (since obviously fog is amazing for both UE and photography). I'd really like it if I could find a way to receive a phone call when this happens, or maybe have my computer make a loud noise that will wake me up in the night. I'm thinking about writing my own program to do this, but I thought before I went through all that work, I would check to see if anyone knew of any existing service that does this? I know there are other people who care about specific weather conditions in the night; like employers or school principals who want to be woken up earlier if road conditions are bad so they can cancel work or school. Also, if anyone knows something about meteorology and can give me some good information about how to predict when there is likely to be dense fog, that information would be great too.

| | | Amazing! Almost exactly what I wanted...except that I'm a bit worries that just a text message won't actually wake me up. Thanks! EDIT: Do you know what kind of radius this will work on? It doesn't say. I want to be alerted if there is fog in the area, even if it's not exactly in my zip code. [last edit 4/21/2009 1:09 AM by DJ Craig - edited 1 times]

| | | Weatherbug. It makes a chirping sound on your computer when there's an alert... I guess if you turned your speakers way up it might work.. You can probably change the alert noise as well. I dunno if it even exists anymore though. I'm too lazy to google it. I just remember it from long ago.

Not a clue how precise it is! Unlike my lazy friend Adam, I was not too lazy to Google but the Google results are the extent of my knowledge.

lol I did look around on Google before posting this. I found a lot of emergency alert systems and weather alert systems, but nothing that was customizable enough to only send an alert for fog. I'll look at Weatherbug.

| | | Move to jolly ole England! If someone wrote like a partner program or other augment for WeatherEye to give alerts on certain weather conditions it would be right on the money. Edit sp [last edit 4/21/2009 1:40 AM by G.U. - edited 1 times]

| | | I use the free applet available from the Weather Channel, and when we had fog problems earlier this year (And we have BAD fog in the San Joaquin Valley), it would play the sound of a clap of thunder and give the National Weather Service's Severe Weather Alert on the applet. Also has live RADAR and animated RADAR available 24/7. I've liked it, especially when a short-planned UE trip crops up out of the blue.

| | | For weather events such as tornado warnings, flood warnings, hurricane warnings, etc, a weather alert radio from someplace like Radio Shack would work. Unfortunately fog watches or warnings do not seem to be part of the standard set of alerts. You should call your local NOAA office and see if fog watches or warnings are a local option and could still be received on a weather radio. http://www.radiosh...categoryId=2032069 http://www.weather...ormmaps/tn-cwa.htm Even if fog warnings are not transmitted, it is still useful to have a weather alert radio to alert you to any pending major weather events.
