Has anyone ever seen or heard of a location DB in a map format, similar to a real-estate search. It would be really convenient to be able to search for locations within x Km of a point.
I tried searching and couldn't find any mention of anything like this...

I've stumbled across things like this on google maps before, where people will mark all the locations they know about... but that seems kinda like cheating, even more than using the regular DB is... Besides, you just have to go to your state and look for towns in your area, not really so hard

- I believe this has been mentioned a time or two in the rookie forum, but it bears repeating. I don't want this to sound elitist, but when I find and explore a new location, I usually -don't- put it in the DB. This is not because I claim 'ownership' of these things (I mean, c'mon...I can't hide a drain!), but because I've heard of and seen sites getting invaded and vandalized once they're posted. Once any information goes online, it can be gotten - not even all 'full members' are trustworthy. I like to think I'm doing this to protect sites, and I'll bring anyone who's not a screwball to any location I know of.

- I think that most of the explorers here don't put locations they find in the DB, at least until it's undergoing demolition or something. I don't know if it's because we like to show off at meetups (lol) or what. But I've always been leery of putting GPS coordinates to something cool online, just because that makes it hard to keep the riff-raff out (those who won't search on their own usually like to break things). Recently I encountered a drain where the infall was marked on GPS, with at least two separate neat things far, far inside the drain. Some Geotaggers set up an elaborate puzzle in a Durham drain, and that was fun. Most of the fun, though, was not knowing why on Earth there were puzzle clues all over the drain!

- What do you think of this, though? Suppose I put entries in the correct city, but didn't give an exact location in the description? Something like DroolDog's Hidden Mill somewhere near Richmond? I'm not sure if it would be better or worse to say "Ask me where the (secret awesome) drain is and I'll take you to it if I judge you to be worthy." Of the ten-or-so people I've taken to their first drain, none of them were 'rejected' and they all had fun. I like to think part of the fun of exploring is following old clues, sale records, and old maps, to find something neat. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, and want to impress newbs when I get the chance ;)

I was thinking about this recently and I came up with the following solution:
It would be really convenient if everyone could email me their new finds (with security information, access details and a g-maps link please) so I never had to do any of that pesky hard work myself.

I know you busted your balls, got chased by security, crawled through mud, climbed a rusty old drain pipe, spent days scouring maps, hours driving around looking for places all that kinda stuff but I'm really busy and don't have the time right now.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it.

Gah! How did I miss that... Where is the link to the map hidden? Am I just really slow, or is it less obvious?

What, he got bored of showing us all up and left to travel in more elite circles? That's a shame, the most entertaining of users always leave.

Maybe a forum etiquette bot programmed by av to show everyone else what not to do?

Rob, I'll believe ripped wang's tall tales when I see it with my own two eyes. Till then its pixs or GTFO.

I am willing to believe it just to avoid having to see any pics.

Size eleventeen toes, probably. I could dig up old posts, but he/she hasn't logged on in like a month.

But I digress. Basically, the work of finding good locations keeps the riff-raff out. I've recently been doing roofs because I can't go in drains with my foot hurt, (roofing while limping, yeah!) so there. Without a 20-foot ladder you can't get in these places, unless you look closely around the building. Incidentally, I've found a steam tunnel entrance or two, and the way into a remodeling project, while looking.

If I were to then post the location of each climbable roof within a mile, that'd kinda ruin your chance at the fun of spotting a building and finding your way up.
