| | | Hobo Code seems a pretty easy way to communicate with other UE'ers. http://www.worldpa...strel/hobosign.htm (They are all over the net) Most of the 1900-1930s tramp symbols are irrelevant since we aren't looking for handouts, but certainly there are circumstances we can all benefit from alerting each other to. How will people not reading this thread catch on? -Word of mouth (and google) -Curiosity ("What the heck is that symbol?! I saw that at the warehouse last week...") -What better place to start a Wiki for symbols than here on UER? Here are some things I'd like to see communicated: Tunnels flooded ahead Floor weak/dangerous to walk on Police patrol regularly Entrance this way This venue slated for demolition (date in corner) Trespassing allowed/tolerated Letterbox/GeoCache here Dangerous Alley, Many large angry men with knives Dead end/ tunnel end blocked please leave intact for other explorers... What other ones can you think of? My only contention is this: "The first rule of fight club is: Don't talk about fight club." Don't post the symbols on the web, or they will be in every police handbook from here to Morocco, right next to symbols indicating 'satanic activity'. On the other hand, these symbols are only helpful, not meant to take advantage of people. The only real danger if they are discovered by The Man would be to alert them to an area of high trespassing. And its always nice to know where there is open Internet access... [If this has already been discussed elsewhere, please let me know.]

| | | Those codes are fun, but doesn't having online forums pretty much remove any need for such things? A bit like the Cave Clan's early days, where meets were planned by notes scrawled on drain walls - a distant and inconvenient memory these days. Not to be party pooper or anything

| | | Um... don't post on the internet? That makes it -hard- to spread. Look at how the trainhoppers guard their freight schedules and spots...passed hand to hand, not over internet. I always mark rebar that sticks out in drains, but other than that...I figure whoever comes after me doesn't want the 'ex' part of exploring ruined.

Way to break the first rule then! This could be very cool, except for the fact that only 50% (if you're lucky) of the explorer community is likely to implement it. I think in drains plain English is best, ie. "bad air ahead", "meet you here in case of nuclear war", etc. Kind of hard to miss! In popular abandonments, though, provided you didn't significantly damage the site (no spraycans, please), this would be an excellent idea.

| | | Marking things out in abandonments reduces UE to tourism. "follow the sign to a sweet room" "watch out for broken glass" "authentic rotten floor ahead" Half the fun is the thrill of danger in exploring someplace. I want my adrenaline rush as my foot goes through the floor b/c I was too engrossed in the peeling paint to watch where I was going. Then as I try to extract my leg I see I have the perfect angle for a kickass shot of said peeling paint.

I think I agree, except regarding drains, in which some sort of directional and occasional warning marking may be in order: things like "under Portland Ave.", "OUT ---> 1 km" or "depth 3 1/2 fathoms" would probably be appreciated (notice, nothing about what is ahead, only about what is immediately above and below), as knowing the length of/what is above a drain would add more than it would detract from it, and I would think, once someone has determined the water is ## feet deep, probably by how far over their head the water was after walking in, we might as well save other people the trouble of stepping into a pool of drain water? This being said, however, I would never do anything like this to a building, for the reason you mention.

| | | I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this... In some cases it seems to make sence, such as an unexpected hazard (watch for scalpels on the morgue floor!) but in others it does seem like it ruins the exploring aspect, and may attract more police attention. An interesting question though...

Definitely. But this is for those who may not use their common sense. How about a piece of paper held in place by a make shift paper weight? No need to deface the property with chalk etc. And here's a suggestion for a code for 'weak or unstable floor'. Each curved line above the head represents 5 feet so this would read: "Weak floor. Expect sudden stop after 15 feet"
Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back. |

In war zones the guerrilla fighters are know to use subtle warnings for their own and sometimes friendly locals. It may be as simple as a small pile of pebbles, or sticks.
