| | | | | Vertical lift span bridge, Chesapeake < on 4/13/2009 1:08 AM >
| | | My dog ate my usb cord to my camera. Luckily, my girlfriend's sister is loaning me her SD card reader, so here's more germs! Earlier in the morning, before getting lost deep in North Carolina, we decided to scout this two-lane, vertical lift span bridge that recently closed in South Norfolk. Completed August 24th, 1928, this was the oldest operating lift span bridge in the Commonwealth. It was officially closed August 18th, 2008, 6 days before its 80th anniversary. Here are some of my pictures. 0.

It closed because it was going to cost over 4 million for repairs, and with only 7,000 vehicles spanning it every day, the city just decided to shut it down. There are 3 other extremely inconvenient ways to cross the same river. I express inconvenience because this bridge was the only bridge leading directly to the Naval Shipyard. I will be climbing it, or the railroad lift span bridge that also shut down recently. Whichever is taller :]

| | | When I saw that first picture, I thought you were talking about that squat, 14' 6" structure in the foreground, and I was all like, BOOORING. Then realized you were talking about the one in the distance. Looks totally awesome. Can't wait to see some pics from the top!

| | | When they close that down. Well I'm not upset that they closed it down, if that's the bridge that I'm thinking it is it was a 75cent toll and I just happened to drive up to it one day with no cash or coins on in my truck.
Well...... crap........ |
