| | | | | Bury Elementary School < on 4/13/2009 12:25 AM >
| | | On a recent trip to NE NC, my best friend and I were nearly out of gas, lost somewhere in BFE, and about to give up on our UE scouting trip. At least 30 miles from any highway, through acres and acres of farmland, to our relief, we finally found a small gas station. Amazingly, right down the street, we caught our first glimpse of a beautiful old school building. We drove around to the back, and my friend seemed content to walk around the building and take a few snapshots. I had to take the initiative, so I grabbed our supplies and a large floodlight, then ran past him and jumped into an open window. Scouting turned into a nearly full exploration. Here are some of my pictures: 1.

18. I have not been able to find any history on when this school opened or closed, but I will continue looking and will edit this post when I find anything. The only history I can get from my visit, is that the school was obviously damaged in the extensive flooding of the area 10 years ago, and appears to have served as a headquarters for the red cross. In the last picture, those are all red cross MRE rations strewn about the floor. Which were all ravaged by animals since then, it appears. I have found pictures from one previous explorer, and I've contacted them to see if they know more than I do. Whenever I get a chance, I will surely return for more. I think I should also add that when we were in the auditorium, it sounded as there were footsteps going back and forth across the stage. Usually, this would have been enough to scare my friend right back out the window we came in, but this time I guess he didn't notice, and I wasn't going to say anything. About 30 seconds after arriving on the second floor, however, we heard what sounded like a door creaking open, then slamming shut. That was enough for him, and our exploration ceased.

I found one ladies resume mentioning the school. Looks like she taught there for 2 months in 1998. Same year hurricane Bonnie hit. I know most of the area was completely under water, so I imagine this is when the school closed. Looks like most of the equipment there was a little outdated, and when you look at the old test scores for this school, it seems they were a little below the rest of the county and state! It would also explain the extensive water damage in the lower levels, the red cross supplies, and the flooded out basement below the auditorium.

You might edit this. I dont think the lettering fell off, it appears to me that the OP actually photoshopped the name of the school, probably so that it remains anonymous. Probably would be best to respect his discretion.

I would love to share the location with anyone from UER who is interested, I simply edited the name to obey by the rules of the site. I am not sure if the moderators want me to post exact locations unless it is on the database. When I have full membership, I will post full details on all of the locations I have explored. Until then, if you would like more details, please send me a private message. This goes for all of my posts. Even if you know where it is located, please be discreet until the location has been approved by the site mods. Thanks.

Right after I took that picture, I ran past my friend and dove into that window under those blinds. We'll have to go get better pictures of them, together! I would love to have you along. Out of everyone on this site, I have to say I admire you and PCE the most. I would love all of us to get together for a meet-up someday! Just PM me any ideas you have, and I'll do the same. I will probably be going back out by next week, since I just got back from NY today and have a lot of work to do until at least the weekend.

| | | Another reply to deviantbutterfly: By the way, hiding locations isn't to keep normal UER members from going to photograph locations... You never know who can be hiding behind a screen name, looking at this from another perspective besides yours. After all, these forums are open to the public, so I think it is best we keep the exact locations off the public boards. Also, be careful when you go inside. Besides hearing the footsteps in the auditorium downstairs, it did sound like somebody may have been upstairs. If you need somebody to go with you, you can always hit me up on PM! I would love to get some better pictures of the place.

Yup. It is well known that scrappers, vandals, arsonists, security and even the police are on this (and other) forums. It sucks, but they are here.

| | | I dont know what the case in this school is, but there is one in my area that has boxes of computer keyboard and tons of computer modems and monitors stacked on pallets just sitting in the hall shrink wrapped. Ridiculous, either take it to the new school or donate it.

My thoughts, too. What I don't get is leaving stuff behind that could be reused. American educators are in a constant state of underfunding, ya think they'd want to keep/sell some of that stuff. But, if it was underwater there could be bad mold in there, so maybe they can't do anything with it.
You betcha |

There is definitely a mold problem. They probably could have salvaged some more than what they did, after the flood, but didn't. It was all outdated textbooks and equipment, so they just left it to rot.
