There is always a Path.

| | | Call me a little old school but I used to buy 10 packs of glow sticks. The kind that last 12 hours, and if I was taking a new turn I was unfamiliar with I would just leave one behind, and pick them up on my way out. Of course after very long expeditions, sometimes we would just pop a lid and find our way back, above ground. [last edit 5/22/2009 3:26 AM by Cerealx59 - edited 1 times]
But now let us descend to greater woe. Already every star sinks that was rising when I set out, and too long stay is forbidden.- Dante |

Ahh, glowsticks! My group once tried stuffing glowsticks through the holes into a manhole cover (not located on a road, of course) or two from below, hoping to find the approx path the drain takes. After exiting the drain however, we promptly forgot about them. Besides, it's an okay idea in theory, but actually hiking around using educated guesses to find the manholes turns it into a not-so-good idea. I recently bought the Garmin Vista H handheld GPS for planning trips. If it works underground at manhole covers, even better, but I'm not holding my breath. Just a day after the geeps was delivered, I found a way of getting some drain maps (<3 free uni library licenses to $450/mo GIS services) which should resolve the whole mapping dilemma for me. The glowsticks are back to being used for emergency lighting and backtracking purposes!

don't forget the lightpainting, just click the shutter and chuck them at a wall.
And when you finally disappear, We'll just say you were never here. |

I haven't actually tried that yet, and we always seem to have a few in the tube left over at the end anyway. Thanks for the tip.

| | | At some point, I bought a lil waterproof bw garmin for 40$ from craigslist (dont remember model - smth like vista) which could plot the path - but reception was never good enough, even with grate type manholes. Also tried to make a periscope conveniently using xerox mirror pieces. Then i also tried using said mirror pieces as indicators. Oh yeah, and some covers are hard to get to cuz of insane SPIDER infestations. so, no solution was practical enough (and spiders dont help either).
