| | | So it was Good Friday and I was contemplating spending a long weekend by myself as no family was coming to visit this weekend. What better way to spend the day than to go on a daytrip. The first thing was to upgrade the Urbexmobile for this trip. The orange box on the dash actually transmits my GPS coordinates to the internet so that people can login to a secure site and see where the car is at any given time. It also has a 'help' button which will dispatch help to my exact coordinates if pressed. The device in front of the speedometer is also a GPS. This is a CoPilot Live which works in conjunction with a laptop or handheld device. It works with Google Maps to show me a live view of the area all around me (side roads, buildings, etc.) The device in front of the CD player is a computer equipped with Telus wireless internet. From there I can surf UER (best not to do while driving), check email or as I did today, listen to Southpark. Then we have a third device to the right of the mirror, which is my original GPS but can be dismounted and carried with you. Is it overkill for urban exploring? Sure.

This last photo requires some explanation. Upon return to the vehicle I noticed a white van beside mine. I noticed the "Ontario" symbol on the door and thought that it would be nice to meet the person to see if I could gain access inside. It turns out that it was a Commissionaire (government security). He asked what I was doing, and I said taking photos. He then asked me if I had taken any exterior photos. Yes I had. At this point he asked me to leave the property. He had a civil discussion with me about how, people taking photos, leads to more traffic through the area and this is discouraged. He went on to tell me about the local newspaper publishing weekly stories from former employees at this location. Finally he gave me some advice on how to go about getting permission to access the property. As a farewell gesture, I snapped a photo of him checking the doors.
Upon returning to pick up my buddy, visiting friends in Orillia, I mentioned my days adventures to him and his ten year old son. His son became very interested in my adventures and asked if he could come along with me to explore a previously explored location. So with him towing the spotlight and myself towing the camera, we took off to explore. He was quite ecstatic and wanted to see what was in each room. He marvelled at stuff left behind and why they'd leave it. Upon discovering a handful of polished rocks, he decided to take them home with him to trade at Science North's giftshop. I thought about the ethics, and mentioned to him the practice of not taking anything - however knowing this was his first expedition and he was jumping for joy, I didn't protest. On the ride back home he sat in the backseat and surfed my website looking up locations in Sudbury and area that he could visit (with me or his father). At age ten, this is a future urban explorer in the making. So here is a photo my newest urban exploring partner:

| | | I spent the whole day exploring the Smith Falls area. After the Hospital we headed to the regional center and were greeted by 2 commissioners at the entrance and this guy wasn't people friendly. Good to know that you had a great day.

| | | Commissionaires are, in my experience anyways, humorless, accusatory pricks who should be avoided at all costs. If your on the property and theres a broken window...YOUR the one who broke it. Theres an open door? YOUR the one who kicked it in. You have a big camera, a tripod & a valid student ID? too bad, YOUR a degenerate copper thief / vandal Glad to see that your encounter was slightly more reasonable....Although I cant believe the guy asked you to leave the property just for taking some exterior shots... Shouldnt a public building thats historically significant enough to have a friggin plague discussing its illustrious past be accessible to the general public? At least the exterior, for photographic purposes? I mean, its not like our tax dollars pay for its maintenance or anything.... Oh well...I guess things could've turned out worse...at least you got some shots. and thats awesome about your new UE partner...best to hook em young and teach em right...

| | | Well I'd been there for approximately 20 minutes myself. I asked the guard (an older fellow with a slight accent) if he was there "because of me" and he said no, he was just making his rounds. All the doors were locked as well. I did ask him though how one would gain entry. He mentioned there is a woman who, if I'd been there on the right day of the week, would have probably given me a tour. He added that although there are no Ministry of Community and Social Services workers left, that "4 or 5" women still work in the building. All in all it was a polite conversation but he made it clear that I wasn't allowed to be there. As for my young friend, he went home and told his grandparents all about the day and showed them photos of places on my site. This is great to see so much enthusiasm at a young age. I think, though, that his interest is mainly in places where items have been left behind. An old barn, an empty house, may not appeal to him. An abandoned factory with machinery, a house filled with items, would appeal. [last edit 4/11/2009 4:03 PM by Intrinsic - edited 1 times]

| | | Wow, that is a lot of gear. I can do most of that with my iphone, and it fits in my pocket. lol Did the guard happen to mention which day of the week would be good to get the lady to give you a tour? That would be good. I'm thinking I was probably around 10 when my dad took us to wander through Burwash. It's great that you took him with you, especially that you can teach him the 'ethics' now. Maybe when he goes with his buddies in a few years, he'll get them to keep the spray paint at home.

No he didn't say what day. He also suggested contacted the Ministry directly to see about getting access (which would be the first step normally anyways). There were two cars parked in the lot and I hoped that someone would come to the door and ask me WTF I was doing, and go from there... but alas, no such luck. The gear in the car is actually hooked up to a printer in the trunk, as it's meant to be an office on four wheels. I'd rather not get into what the business is but, hmm... perhaps an iPod would have been cheaper As for spray paint, while exploring one location we encountered paint cans and other paint supplies. He commented something to the effect of, "I wish I could find a can of spray paint." Granted he's only ten, but this is also a good opportunity for education and awareness when it comes to PRESERVATION as well as urban exploring. Perhaps he can be one of the ones who goes on to NOT smash windows when he finds a new location. I have high hopes for him lol. [last edit 4/11/2009 4:58 PM by Intrinsic - edited 1 times]

| | | Sounds like a good time My best friend and I bring her 16 year old daughter with us, she's been going since she was about 10 to places that were safe and the bug hasn't slowed down with her. She appreciates locations and history too. Nice you have that shared hobby thing, it's a blast....enjoy
