| | | | Illnesses/Injuries acquired while UEing < on 4/8/2009 11:56 PM >
| | | There may have been a thread started a while ago--I do not much feel like searching at the moment--about acquiring illnesses or things of the like while on an exploration. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? I have been extremely careful when it comes to touching things, plants included, while exploring because you just never know what you might contract. So I'm not quite sure where I went wrong. I had to go to the ER last night because of this horrible rash on my arm that has just gotten out of control. My forearm, over the course of a couple of hours, swelled up quite a bit, to the point that movement provided a sensation of liquid sloshing in my arm. The rash itself had essentially become an open wound, regardless of antibacterial treatment and antibiotic ointment. The doc said it was a really nasty poison ivy or poison sumac rash that had spread like wildfire. My arm first started itching around Wednesday of last week, but there were no visible lesions or markings of any kind. By Saturday, it was clear that there was a rash on my arm, and the area had already blistered. By yesterday, my forearm gorged and the wound leaking pus every waking moment, my friends urged me to see a doctor. So I went. They gave me a large steroid shot in the ass and a steroid prescription and antibiotic. I have never ever had a rash this bad, even when I've been exposed to poison ivy. It has been an ordeal, time and money spent that I really cannot afford. But there you have it.

| | | I thought we told you NOT to stick your hands in the water at the Riverside Treatment plant?!?!?!?!?! Aside from that, poison ivy, oak, sumac is all over most abandonments. You may be one of those blessed individuals that's very sensitive to exposure. Might wear a long sleeve shirt next time and change out of it as soon as you can. Also, don't wash it with your other clothes, (especially your skivvies)

| | | Its probably poison Ivy I had it so bad once that both my eyes swelled shut for three days and I had to be lead around as a blind person would. Your probably one of us lucky few who get it really bad. It take poison Ivy about 2 hours after contact to your skin to start effecting you. If you wash it off before then you'll be fine. Over the years the more exposure to it the less it will get ya. That works for most people anyway.
Piece of advice never take the big pink steroids with coke.

| | | Yeah. They taste pretty bad with water alone. It's prednisone I believe.

Oh there was no contaminated water involved.... this was at an old folks home, not the treatment plant.

| | | Poor Guy I understand your pain. Swimming in chlorinated water helps so does aloe vara Lidocane WD-40 putting wet chewing tobacco on it Nail Polish remover Rubbing alcohol Dry weather helps
Basically anything that will dry it out helps to get rid of it.

| | | I can roll in the shit and it never bothers me. My son, Rugrat who I toss in through windows so he can go unlock the door for me, is 11 and can't get near the stuff or he will have the same symptoms you describe. so take this for what it's worth, but a few years of experience now proves that your best friend is a product called Tecnu. You can get it anywhere, Walmart, Walgreens.... any where that has a half ass decent pharmacy department. It is sometimes package with Caligel (I think thats how it's spelled). But you can put Tecnu on before you go and it helps keep the oils from getting on your skin. That and long sleeves, which are not great in the summer, but hey you do what you have to. My son has had to have the steroids too, and it's not fun. This stuff will save you some grief, and it's not very expensive. So remember... Tecnu, avoidance, long sleeves, and washing your skin when your done.

| | | I'll keep that in mind. I actually was wearing long sleeves when I was infected with the shit. But I'm guessing when changing, I didn't think about it and the clothe rubbed on my arm. But I'm definitely going to be more cautious from now on because this is freaking ridiculous. Even after the steroid shot and whatnot, my ar is still swollen and feels funky.

WRONG. Poison Ivy or rather the Urushiol Oil that is secreted is an allergic reaction that is works as a reverse tolerance. The more you get exposed to it; the worse you will get it. Tecnu Skin Cleanser is the best stuff for getting rid of the oil. I just change my clothes, put them straight into the washer, wash my hands and use the Tecnu cleanser. on my hands/arms/face. AND WHATEVER YOU DO; WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU TAKE A PISS. I've made that mistake before. Was not fun, srsly.

Beat me to it, I had it bad one year and Tecnu works best.

Actually Raticus beat both of us to it. but he didn't mention which type of Tecnu. The Tecnu Calagel is for after the rash develops. And the Tecnu skin cleanser is what you use instead when your first get the oil on your skin. I've been exposed for over two hours, went inside and used the skin cleanser; I got the rash but not as bad as I normally do. If I wash up in under 30 minutes of exposure; it prevents it all together.

| | | word. Most people start with some immunity to poison ivy. I use to claim I could roll in it and never get it. Then one day, boom, I had it. The more you are exposed to it the more it breaks down your immunity to it. Eventually you will get it.

| | | My ex got into poison ivy while pregnant, so she couldn't get the steroids shot. The best stuff in that case (or if you're itchy but not enough to UE the ER) is a lotion called Sarna. For maximum effect, shower first, and put the Sarna on while still wet. You'll feel like you're freezing, but the itching will go away, at least for a while. She had to do it for a week at least, maybe a couple of weeks, but it kept her from having to take any chances with the baby. Maybe we should have named the baby "Ivy" instead of "Jessica".

| | | I just spray down with OFF and wear long pants with those velcro stretchy straps you put on your pant legs. i also keep buji wipes in my first aid kit ( http://www.everyth...?pc_product_id=164 ) which work amazing and calamine lotion at home. The only illness/injury we've encounted while exploring is when our dog go a massive gash from low barbed wire in the woods on the way to a location. and the usual ticks.

Well when I was younger I used to get it super bad and over the years and exposeure I have gotten it less and less badly so maybe its just me.
