Off a minor highway near the TX-OK border is this magnificent antiquity. Built ca. 1930, it served as a nursing home initially, then had an attachment built on as an orphanage sometime later on. It was in commission for a few decades but has been abandoned for years. It has also been the victim of a great deal of vandalism and fires. Yet, it retains something wonderous and unique.

Awesome shots! Maybe some day I'll get the courage to check it out. So far, this is the only place that I can't bring myself to go into for some reason. Nothing paranormal or anything like that, just a bad feeling I get when I see it.

Nice set. The sink, open door w/paint peel, and B&W hallway are badass.

Well... I did have a very close encounter with a buzzard on the second floor.

I'd rather come in contact with a buzzard than yellow jackets. *shudder*

I've heard that buzzards, when threatened, will use an attack unique to buzzards: projectile vomiting. Buzzards are awesome.

It was actually a really funny encounter. I was walking down a hall, trying to be stealthy, and the buzzard was walking out of a room into the same hall, and we almost literally ran into each other. We startled each other, both jumped back, and made a surprised noise (his was more of a squawk). Then he scuttled off to do buzzardy things while I tried to take pictures of him. If only I were quicker with the draw...

OH hell yeah. Shit that first time was one of the freakiest sounds I've ever heard in a building. Startled the ever lovin' shit out of me till I figured out that it was a bird.

So what kind of *bad* feelings do you get when you see this place??

Hmm... let me start by saying that I didn't meet my birth father until about 2 years ago. Up until then, I had an image of him looking like an older Tom Seleck because that's how my mom always described him. I never saw a picture or anything, so that's just always the image I had to go on. Not knowing him never bothered me either, as you can't really miss something you never knew. I was never bothered by the fact he wasn't around and never did I have dreams about him.

One night I had a dream (Before I even knew this place existed) that I was walking up to a building to explore it, but as I got closer I saw that it was probably active. It was suppose to be abandoned but the bricks were bright red and the pillers in the front were bright white. There was a black iron fence around it and kids running around with balloons on the end of a stick instead of a string. *(shrug)*.

I walked to the gate and Tom Seleck was there handing these stick balloons to kids who were randomly running up to him and then taking off to play in front of this amazing building. I started to walk past Tom and he stopped me. He said I can't go in and shouldn't. I asked why. He pointed to some big cartoon-like lions laying in the pathway leading to the front door of the building. They looks weird. Even in my dream I knew something was odd about them. They weren't real lions, but they moved and roared... almost like a living computer animation of sorts...

I was going to try to get past them, but the look in their eyes was enough to startle me awake. I woke up breathing hard with a rapid heart beat. I've had bad dreams before.... and normally this one wouldn't compare to some dreams I've had... but the warning, the lions and the look the lions gave me totally freaked me out.

About a month or so later my roommate at the time told me he had heard about an orpahage or something in that area. I did research online and ended up finding a web site that showed this place as being haunted. I didn't care about the paranormal part of it, I wanted to see the building. I did more research and found out where it was. We drove out to Sherman and when I saw the buildings in person for the first time, I got a weird de ja vu feeling. It only lasted a second... but then my dream came back to me. I told my roommate that the building reminded me of a dream I had. I was no longer scared by the dream of course, that is until I walked to the front of the building before going in and saw the fountains with the two lions on each side of it... and looked down the pathway to see a spot where Tom Seleck should have been standing handing out stick balloons to kids.

I looked back and forth for a long time until finally he yelled at me to come on before someone saw me. I started to go in and as I got back to where the lions were, I just couldn't go any further. I wasn't really scared, I just didn't want to... it's hard to explain. So we ended up making that long drive for nothing.

A few days later my older sister called me with what she said was great news... she had actually located my birth father. I was speechless and it was a very emotional time for me. I ended up meeting him and family I never knew I had and we are now very close.

So there ya go... Hope no one fell asleep.

Um... wow. That's quite a dream. Almost like a premonition. The lions are a crazy coincidence. It's just too bad that Tom Seleck wasn't actually there.... I'm glad to hear that despite uneasy feelings with this place you were able to establish a close relationship with your birth father. That's incredible that things like that are possible so many years after the fact. Thanks for sharing, Happiedaze

Hopefully someday you'll be able to tackle the Woodmen Circle Home. It really is fascinating. You'd really love it I think.

I hope so too. I think the next time some people decide to head that way and I'm available, I will tag along...

Oh and I just found out (Thanks to Robert that they used to have balloons on sticks. How crazy is that?

Very very crazy. But, I mean really.. who DIDN'T have balloons on sticks back in the day?

I'm thinking of heading back up there in a few weeks... more like a month or so. Once school is done with. It'd be cool to have some company. I'll give you a heads up.
