Search Engine Trap?
< on 2/29/2004 3:54 AM >

Hey, I noticed the entire list of locations is being listed on the front page in little itty bitty text. Is this simply to get search engines to pick up stuff on the site better? I'm not sure if this is a great idea or not...

Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years.

Oh, that is so lame, and entirely what it is there for. Is this really necessary?

If it is, that's pretty fucked up.

Here's a forum where everyone is concerned about proliferating their hobby, and at the same time advertising it like hell.

it's there so that the search engines know that this site knows something about x location, so that when someone types that location into a search engine, they find this site, and hopefully sign up and contribute something useful to that location.

it's not really "advertising". the search engines don't seem to like following the links in the location DB, so i'm just helping them out by pointing them in the right direction.

I personally think its a good idea, it adds a whole degry of crap to the main page

Seriously though, it might crack down on n00bs asking about locations and whatnot and saying they didn't come up in google or what not.

I'd be more worried about improving the googleability of locations that might then be found by the rightful owners or someone of authority that does give a rip. I'm not aware of how well google finds locations without the main page trap, but Av usually knows what he's doing, so I'll have to trust his judgement that this is needed.
