Packard House - Warren, OH

Goodness, I haven't been here in forever. Yet I've had my account for over two years. Huh.

Anyhow! I got to go out with a friend yesterday and get photos of some places we actually didn't plan to stop at. I have A LOT of photos, so I'm only going to post a few. I don't want to bog anyone's connection down or anything.

This is the old Packard House apartments. Which were in-use until a few years back (at least five, I don't recall what year they were cleared out and closed up). The place was condemned for various reasons (mostly poor upkeep) and all the tenants ushered elsewhere. We couldn't get in the upper parts, but we got in the bottom/ground floor easy enough (broken window) and we were thrilled at how awesome the place looked. It literally looked like no one had been in there for a decade or more. The place was entirely gutted, the stairs torn out or boarded up. In-between walls removed and just the stone left in its place. So it was quite easy to move between the apartments.

After we checked out the inside, we went around back to see if we could find a way in to the upper apartments. The building is located right next to the welfare office and in a VERY busy daytime area. So we were already tempting fate just by wandering around.

We didn't find a way in, the place was boarded up tight. Which I'm actually kind of thankful for. Because if we could've found a way in, so could people who would trash the place. And it's a VERY old building. They were originally luxury apartments back in the day. How the mighty have fallen.

We did end up getting approached by a security guard from next door, inquiring what we were doing. They didn't seem terribly concerned when we told them we were just 'photographers'. They told us to be careful with the fire escapes and be careful because sometimes people sleep in the building (which I actually saw ZERO signs of).

As we were leaving, a kid waiting in the parking lot told us they were going to check for No Trespassing signs to see if they COULD call on us for being around the building. But we were already heading off and nothing ever came of it.

Are these the apartments on North? If they are or not it looks like they removed plaster walls etc. to get a better idea for restoration. Or maybe to check for asbestos

Yeah, they are. I don't know if the rest of the place is gutted like these, but I'd imagine so.

I'm really hoping they are going to restore it. Last I read was something about an Amish man buying the property. But that was, like, a year or so ago.

It's a gorgeous place. Here's a shot of the front of it, though the photo is not my own and I'm not sure of the blog I snagged it from.

I really love old houses with the towers like that. I lived in a home that had one in the front. And though it wasn't part of the apartment I lived it, I would always sneak into the vacant apartment to hang out in the round rooms.
