Austin - The Abandoned Zoo (Image Heavy)

(I also posted this on the SomethingAwful forums.)

My friend and I are beginning urban explorers, so please excuse the camera-phone pictures, as we don't have anything better at the moment (though I am looking for something - preferably low-priced and decent). I found out about the remains of an abandoned zoo, so we set out to document what's left. These photos are from two trips.

From what we could find out, this zoo opened in the 1940s, and closed down in 1970 after pressure from the humane society. The largest (and only) building still standing is the barn, which was used to house feed and animals, most likely ponies and deer.

The barn looks like it might have been damaged by a fire. Inside is some not-so-welcoming graffiti.

Another view. We decided it looked like a 'Silent Hill' barn.

Today, with the sun NOT setting as it was on Saturday, we braved the fire-damaged hayloft. There were a bunch of beehives up there. You can see out the back of the barn, and the 'party zone' of busted-up chairs.

Another view of the chairs. Filmed in vaseline-o-vision.

I'm not sure who Duckman is. Perhaps he's related to Count Duckula.

That is NOT a duck.

An old light socket. I seriously doubt this place is wired for electricity anymore.

Names on the wall....

..Perhaps the former inhabitants of the Sex Room. I dubbed it the 'Love Shack' instead, while my exploring companion called it the 'Fuck Hut'. And once more with the Duckman.

Cozy. I bet if you ran a black light over it, the entire bed would glow.

:420:

Looking out the back, past the party zone.

A cage. To hold what, I don't know.

The interior of the mystery cage.

According to websites, this cage, and others like it, were probably used to house lions and alligators.

What looked like an aviary. It doesn't hold birds very well anymore - the top is mostly gone.

Anybody need a fridge? Clean out the rotting leaves, and it's yours!

The parting shot: Either this thing (which looks like the body of a fan) has been here so long that the tree's grown up through it, or somebody chucked over a full-grown tree.

That's the old zoo. We'll go back again eventually. Hopefully, with a nicer camera.

That last picture is of a cleverly designed eco and plant friendly planter. Much better than those railroad ties for forming a decorative retaining wall around the tree because it lacks the chemical treatment and slots so the previously infant tree won't drown.

That tree-fan is awesome. Give it another few years, and the tree can grow to envelop the fan, eventually absorbing it. Then it could petrify, and a million years from now some alien will try to figure out how the planet's previous inhabitants grew fans in trees.

Reminds me of elementary school, when I asked the teacher if it would be a fossil if I took a tire, dropped it in wet concrete, and buried it for a long time.

And that reminds me of when I was a kid, I was a composting fool. The reason: I knew that coal was made of plant matter from the cretaceous and since I was tossing out the old lettuce and egg shells behind the shed, one day we'd have a coal mine in our backyard and we'd be rich. Weird how hundreds of millions of years don't seem like a long time when you're six.

Ha! And you wanted a thread about urban exploration. We've hijacked it and diverted it to Childhood Nostalgia Int'l Airport (IATA code: NOS).

Very nice! It kind of reminds me of the old wild animal park we have here that is now abandoned.

I really like your descriptions of the pictures... it's so much more entertaining than 'Here are some pictures I took... enjoy.' Know what I mean?

Yeah. Pictures are nice, but I like to make it more entertaining for people.

We fail at hijacking the thread. On to the next one.
