Son, I am disappoint
| | Vault Explorers, I need an opinion < on 3/18/2009 9:52 PM >
| | | Just walking across a part of campus I usually never go the other day I saw a large concrete pad with a metal trap door and an air vent which I had never noticed before. There was a hole in the lid but it was too small to get my finger into. Do you think this is some kind of vault? Is it worth checking out? And what sort of popper do you think I'd need? | | | hard to gauge from this photo, but what i also notice is the ground around it the grass seems to be layed over some larger square area or is that just concrete ? either way it would indicate that whatever is underneath is likely to cover at least that much of the space / not a gaurentee though.

theres a sidewalk in the top of the pic, the concrete bumps up against it, and there is grass on this side of it. I'm going out, I'll try to get a better picture

| | | In my experience, covers like that usually only lead to tiny rooms with small pipes or electrical stuff. The stuff in it leaves through tiny tunnels. not worth going in. However, I have never come upon something of this size with a vent thing. I think it would be worth checking out. It looks like you could use something like a hook to open it, or try a pickax. Edit: that hole is smaller than i thought. a pickax probably wont work. I'm not sure how I would open it. [last edit 3/18/2009 11:32 PM by Dick Winter - edited 1 times]

| | | I figured it was probably just a room the size of the concrete pad, which is why I guessed it was a vault. I've not gone into a vault before, but I'm sure someone here has so I figured I'd ask. Honestly, I would have ignored it if not for the vent.

| | | that hole looks more like a keyway from this angle, u might get lucky jiggling it with something....the vent certainly adds to the interest level. On a campus one would dream it is for access to service tunnels.

| | | The hole is probably to screw the door down, it looks threaded. What is the rectangular thing to the left of the hole on the edge of the door? Could pop up and be a handle?

| | | i have seen these before, the rectangular thing is a handle, inside the round hole there is a smaller square one, you need a square piece of metal that fits tightly inside it, turn it while you pull up on the handle and it will open. if you cant find a square rod that fits in the hole use a flat head screwdriver and stick it in diagonally so it contacts opposing corners of the hole

Brilliant! is there generally anything worth checking out down there? This thing is out in the open near a road the police patrol a lot so if its just a room full of fiber optics or something I'm gonna pass on it so I don't get caught lol

| | | I was not aware that there was a separate subset of "vault explorers". How do you define "vault", and how does one find and enter a "vault".
Sometimes I wonder if my obsession with flashlights led to my interest in Urban Exploration, or conversely, if my interest in exploration led to my flashlight obsession |

I always imagined it as an offshoot of drainers. And IMO vaults are the big concrete utility access rooms like this one is apparently

| | | Be carefull with any square or rectangle lid, unlike a round manhole cover, they can fall in and cause thousands of dollars in damage to copper and fiber communications cables and splice cases. If you get caught after a mishap such as a 200LB cover falling into a comm or electrical vault, it could be very expensive.

| | | What was said above about the square inside the circular hole is right - that's the latch, usually the key for it is a bent metal rod with a slightly tapered square section on it, it slips into the square part of the hole, grips it, and then you can open the latch. The hatch would be hinged on the size opposite the latch and probably on a spring assist so it's easy to lift. The round metal bit on the back left corner is a vent, the space underneath is probably at least that big. It could be a plumbing vault, could be electrical, could be almost anything else. The only way to find out is to open it up and look inside (and post pictures).
