| | | Returned to Dixie Square Saturday. The weather was wonderful for this visit, there were sunbeams everywhere. Went through a few stores near Penneys I had not seen in January, more of Penney's second floor, some freezers in JEWEL, and the third "sub-floor" of Penneys with the machinery for the heating/cooling still there. http://www.flickr....72157615203566309/

| | | Love it, thanks! Any idea what the story is on those truck murals on the boarding? Seemed odd.

| | | I would think it's because they would want people to see a decent painting instead of plywood covering up a window display. Oddly, that window is the only one to have the paintings, and some punks still managed to break the glass it was protecting. The paintings are signed by the creator, the first name was Stafford, but I can't remember the last name.

| | | Basically, a kitchen display company purchased the Montgomery Wards building, and pushed all the debris and former Wards decor into the mall. This debris, however, contained asbestos and all work was halted. For unknown reasons, however, on Christmas Eve 2005, demo crews arrived and demolished 60% of the Wards building. It just so happened that the Mayor of Harvey was driving past the mall that night and spotted the demo crews, and ordered a cease and desist. The mall property was sold to John Deneen who planned to redevelop the site. In March 2006 the remains of the Montgomery Ward building were torn down in a publicity stunt for the media to say the entire mall had been torn down. Crews leveled the Wards building, the Main Entrance to the mall, and the Central Energy Plant, since asbestos had been removed already by the previous crew. As soon as the news cameras left, so did the demolition crews. Deneen was responsible for removing all remaining asbestos before further demolition could continue. By April, he was out of funds for any further work on the mall. Deneen was later arrested for threatening the heads of United Demolition, and supposedly they found ski masks and a shotgun in his car. He is still behind bars as far as I know.

| | | All of Harvey is a craphole. But it's not the most dangerous place to explore in the greater Chicago area. Heck, the police department shares a parking lot!

| | | These are really amazing images, thanks for sharing! I especially liked the photo of all the abandoned phones and the image where the light is leaking in from the ceiling onto the decayed mess below. I hope to find this place one day myself...

| | | neat pics, I thought that whole mall was leveled, guess not. I've always wanted to go check it out but I dont like the idea of the police station next door and the stray 'watch' dogs that live there.

| | | @ RADIOGUY21: My friend has been inside Dixie countless times (was part of the film crew doing the documentary) and ran into the dogs only once. They stayed their distance and were "more bark than bite". @ Radio2600: Someone did about 5 years ago, but since then the second floor of Penneys collapsed which now blocks "his path" in, and the wooden walls put up by the asbestos removal crews make it impossible to drive the route the BluesMobile ran in the movie. However, (not that I encourage or recommend this), a car can possibly be driven into the mall through the old entrance to Woolworth as the store burnt down years ago, and parked in the center court for pics. Not a very smart idea due to the nails and glass shards all throughout the mall. @ deadlystiletto: Thanks! The phones are just randomly piled in the freezer area of Jewel Food Store, along with dozens of lunch trays and plastic take-out containers just randomly piled back there. My guess is someone went through all the stores and yanked the phones out, then smashed them back there for the hell of it. Some of the keypads and electronics are still there in pieces. @ Rotes: I would guess a neighborhood with an 800,000 sq.ft. shopping center rotting away across the street seems pretty rough to me. The stretch of Dixie Highway that goes past the mall is littered with abandoned buildings. There is an old Jack in the Box across from the mall that has been closed for just about as long as Dixie. And finally, I dug up one more pic. Didn't like how it came out at first but after some minor tweaking I think it looks OK. The Penneys court is one of the most difficult places to shoot because its both very bright and very dark at the same time.

| | | Excellent pics. It looks like you picked the right time of the day to take these photos, with the way the sun was shining into the building. Also, great job with the You Tube video. It is obvious that you have put a lot of work into all of this. [last edit 6/12/2009 3:41 AM by hokoglowko - edited 1 times]

| | | Ive read the owner of the mall faulted on paying the demolition company and thats why they suddenly stopped demolition. I bet the property is worth less than the cost to finish the demolition. It will be interesting to see how long that place will stand on its own.

| | | You pretty much got it right. The developer was later arrested for threatening the heads at United Demolition. Supposedly the police found ski masks and a loaded shotgun in his car. Until he gets out, or until Harvey takes back the property, Dixie's future is uncertain.
