I got mine through Urban Outfitters. Quick, cheap and easy. Skip Amazon this time.

Agreed, $9.99 + shipping. Seems like a deal.

In general, urban exploration books that are out of print tend to go up in price enourmously. I've had several books that originally were in the 10-20 GUILDER (that's 4.50-9 euro) range being offered secondhand (and not in mint condition) for 60 euro or more. I mostly deny these offers and keep on searching.

However, if you know where to get a copy of Les Tramways vicinaux de Charleroi et du Centre for a reasonable price, I'd be very obliged...

Damn. I ordered it from Amazon yesterday for $57. Just called and cancelled, then ordered from Urban Outfitters.

Just did a little reading on the Aurthur Jeff Chapman (19 September 1973 – 23 August 2005).

Chapman died of cholangiocarcinoma on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 — three years after a successful liver transplant at Toronto General Hospital (a location he loved to explore). He was 31 years old. Family members say that doctors believe the cancer was caused by exposure to carcinogens Jeff encountered while exploring abandoned industrial sites

This is kind of scary, makes me glad I always carry a respirator mask while inside industrial sites.

Just curious but...can someone (preferable a wise die hard explorer) tell me if this book is worth picking up? I'm an avid explorer and I wasn't sure if this book had any advice that would be new to me. Shit, I feel like I could write a book on the subject myself.

If you did, I'd read it. Your site is most impressive.

As for Access All Areas, I make a point to re-read it every once in a while, because I always find new tidbits of advice that I can apply to locations I'm interested in. It's not the end all-be all of UE resources, of course, but it has some pretty damn valuable information nonetheless.

I think the value in Access All Areas is that it's cheerful and enthusiastic - If you want to get fired up about getting out and exploring, it's a good way to get in the mood. I imagine that if you didn't have a resource like this site, and this community, in which to discuss the topic, this book could be a great emotional support, and help validate exploration as something more than childish stickybeaking.

However, if you've been around for any time at all, I don't think you'll find that it, or any other resource, has much to tell you that you don't already know. That's not to say that there isn't some good advice in there - it's just that there's only so much you can say on the topic, and a lot of it is just grounded in common sense anyway.

So, I'd treat it like you would a conversation with a like-minded urban explorer and read it because it's a fun topic, and treat any practical advice you might glean as a bonus.

Hope that's useful!

Stuff!

Hey Waffle, if you want I have a copy floating around you can borrow.

It's a good read and can be picked up relatively cheap on Amazon as people have mentioned. The Zine's are also excellent to read, back in the days before 9/11 it paints a contrast of some of the changes you'll encounter now. Money well spent.

Thank you, sir! I do already have a copy, though.

I was about to say I could see it from where I'm sitting, but true to its author's spirit, it's gone all stealthy on me, and I can't seem to spot it.

10/1 bet it has disguised itself in a dust cover titled "Refining your English Gentleman's accent and the art of the Monacle"

DO NOT PRONOUNCE THE NAME OF THE NINJ...

"jeff" sounds way less cooler than "Ninj".

It isn't about revealing his real name, many people all ready know it. Most people know him as Ninj, and it was the name he chose to grace the cover of his book.

It's a VERY rare disease. The suspected primary cause is still unknown. It's convenient to say it came from his exploring. But we are exposed to carcinogens every day without ever leaving our homes.

If you understood how cancer works; you would know that if you don't die from something else first, that getting cancer is a 100% certainty. It's solely the buildup of mutations in gene expressions, and your bodies inability to repair the mutations. Which happen over a normal human lifetime. Exposing oneself to certain things speeds up the mutation buildup process. But you could get hit by a truck tomorrow and the asbestos you inhaled yesterday wouldn't make a bit of difference.

*edit* and yes the book is worth reading.

Wow, I didn't know that it had gone out of print, let alone that it is so expensive now. It is a great book, glad I got it a few years ago when it was still in print.

I just contacted Liz at Infiltration to inquire about the rumor, and received this response...

"I just heard this rumor today myself: not really true, though my current quantities are low. 3rd edition is going to the printer this week -- feel free to spread the truth!

I won't let it go away, not to worry.

Dammit.

* Swiffer shuts off the Xerox machine.

Now what am I going to do with the 500 copies I just made?

Glad to hear that the book isn't out of print. My buddy needs a copy of it, so he'll just wait until the price drops again. Stupid laws of economics...

Just to clear up a couple things (and thanks to Shawn for forwarding along my response from a few days ago.)...

Yes, the book is only available in low quantities from Amazon/other major outlets via our distributors.

Coach House Books (distributor) in Canada still has a few on hand for Canadian outlets, and I have literally a few dozen in my house. However, the third ed. is at the printer now, and I look forward to receiving a large and unwieldy shipment sometime very soon.

Please be certain that as long as there is still interest in this book, I plan to keep it available to the public (at less than $50/copy auction prices!) Same goes for the back issues of Infiltration, still available on infiltration.org, and same goes for the website's existence itself. People with questions should email me...frankly I'm not sure why they don't do this already.

As to cholangiocarcinoma, Jeff/Ninj was long plagued with autoimmune diseases, including ulcerative collitis and primary schlerosing cholangitis, both very rare illnesses, well before he became the avid urban explorer some of you knew or have heard about. It was his first lengthy hospital stay that got him particularly attached to service corridors and other institutional exploring.

Though I dare say the carcinogens present in exploring life (and indeed, daily city living) are probably not helping any of us out, Jeff just kinda had, to paraphrase him, a crappy body. To suggest it is a direct cause-and-effect from exploring would be inaccurate.

It's scary to contact relatives of dead people. I don't know why, but many people feel like this. Either they think it to be rude or scary or it's just something subconscious.
