We'd entered an external stair well to gain access to the roof of a city building. After mulling around up there for a while we were coming down. First member of the party dropped back down the ladder to ensure it was all clear. We got the signal that it wasn't so were staying low.

After a little while he was able to check them out to see just who it was. Appeared to be a couple of crackheads shooting up at the base of the stairs. We had to stick together tightly and mush on through them to get out of there without getting knifed or needled in the process.

Were on our way down and past them when it ended up just being a couple of kids chopping up and smoking some pot. "Mannn don't dob us in righttt" they said half dazed. "You didn't see us and we didn't see you" we just said to them and quickly passed them in the stairwell closing the door behind us.

So didn't turn out to be psycho crackheads or the police afterall but if you're in an encounter with them, stick together tightly if you're in a group or avoid them if you're alone. Try and steer clear because the last thing you want is a needle or knife jabbed in your leg.

Not while exploring, but I've had my share of encounters, mostly on the subway while going home after a night's out... very unpleasant, but in that situation you sorta have to upper hand. They very well know that they are very much too much in the open, so act well and there is no problem. Be firm and show with some eye contact that you know what they are doing, and that it is not what they should be doing there. BUT at the same time make clear that if they lay low, you won't be causing them trouble. The heroin boiling junky does want as little attention and disturbance as possible, so cater to that.

While in a very non-public place, it probably is a different ball game. Then you are more or less trespassing their safe place to shoot up and relax. The basic response is probably still the same, your face can tell that you know what they are doing, your actions can show that 'you mean them no harm'. Just passing through, sorry for the disturbance, enjoy yourself!

The crazed out ones are a different story altogether, obviously. There is no use using logic or reason, two options: fight or flight.... Be a bad-ass motherf*cker or be gone very fast

Aaahh... I miss my big city days

My experience was when I was at my last welding job. A guy 30 years older than me came in and somehow got a job as a welder, even though he couldn't weld. Word got around that he was a local crackhead. I couldn't believe it at first, because I'm young and naive.

Then, things started to disappear around the shop. Welding cable, grinders, trailer parts, grills, and anything copper. I took him home one day, and as he got out, he selected a CD from my console and walked into his home. He then stopped coming into work.

Time went by. Spring turned to summer- summer, to fall. Memories of the crackhead began to fade. Then one indian summer day, A hooded figure appeared in the shop. The crackead had returned, expecting to pick up where he left off. His request was declined, and he was forced to leave.

Days passed before we heard of him again. It came with the sound of a ringing telephone. A lawyer was on the opposite end. The crackhead said we were not honoring his medical "condition" and he was suing. We said said go fuck yourself. Then, due to a combination of clueless management (who hires a supervisor for a department with one person in it, seriously?) and a poor economy, we were forced into the cold world of laid-off workers. 2 days later, I found a new job that does drug tests, and the crackhead couldn't work there.

All that. Also, crackheads will kill people for a fix. Avoid them at all costs. Here is a video, showing just how dangerous they can be: http://www.youtube...atch?v=T7TQL6tccH0

Yo' Shoppin cart has been PIMPED!

I was in Ottawa and my brother and I where coming back to our hotel from the bar through an alley and ended up running into this dude with a beauty and the beast colored pencil kit doodling these weird native-art-ish sketches. I bought one off him for 15 bucks (Which he used for crack likely) and he told us "Big Brother is watching" and wanted to sell me this shank he made to protect me from a roaming gang of N****** (Racist word).

Never while exploring.

A good friend of mine is addicted to crack. She started snorting coke 8 years ago and lost her job because of it in 2004. She got a job in Bermuda and while there switched to crack, I visited her in Bermuda in 2005 and although she was making a hundred grand american she was smoking so much that she couldn't afford her rent. Needless to say the job didn't last very long and back in Canada she got busted for possession and went to jail. She broke her bond 3 times - the last time she was picked up at my house during my housewarming party in front of mine and my husband to be's family (she had told me that she was clean and that she was on a curfew but was in fact under house arrest) three cruisers in front of our house, we had been there 2 months. I've talked to her a few times since then but I'm tired of the lies and haven't seen her in over a year. She's been in rehab several times and immediately starts again when she gets out. I've known her for 23 years and unfortunately cannot do anything to help her.

We read stories on UER about encountering kids who are stoned, drunk or up to mischief.

We read stories about the encounters with 'crackheads' and the funny or not-so-funny results.

We see photos of the squalid living conditions that they either live in, or shoot up in.

Your story though, put the "human" factor into perspective. It reminded me that these people probably don't want to be living such a life and are victims of the powerful addiction and bad choices just as their families and friends are.

Great post!

Awesome! That's much better than most of the Crackhead art we get in West Toronto. There was this one guy named Les that used to (or maybe still does) go around to all the patios trying to sell these insane pen on card scribblings for $5 all the time. I think I bought one once, it was called 'Radar Love'. It looked like what would happen if you taped a pen to an epileptic seizure.

Radar Love, Nice Ahahaa...Yeah he let me pick my own sketch, there wasn't much to choose from and I have a feeling he didn't do much drawing...He wasn't really the eccentric daylight street artist type!

Nice enough guy just in a hard place.

Up on a rooftop one night this fuckwit paint-sniffer was getting lippy and aggressive towards us. After we left and talked amongst ourselves we realised we shared the same unspoken thought. Wouldn't it be a shame if in the scuffle he fell off the roof?

Hahaha... That may be me, it may not be me, ya know what I mean?

But the goggles, they come from Save More Sports Surplus Store at the corner of Queen st. and Jarvis in Toronto. I think they are Korean or Japanese fighter pilot goggles.

I got them for sandstorms at Burning Man... They do nothing.

I ran into a couple of bums while exploring in Newark once. They wont bother you tho if they see you. If you just ignore them, they'll just ignore you. Theyre not really looking for trouble so i wasnt too worried about them.

I have been to a few spots in the same city where it was clear that crackheads hang out there. Typical needle caps, plastic bags, and cans of alcohol were scattered around a room. Luckily they werent there when i was there.

I don't need goggles for that. I figure they cover up that little twinkle of crazy eye that usually precedes 90% of everything stupid that I've ever done in my life.

Just like when a redneck yells out "Hey watch this" moments before he submits his Darwin Award application.

hey everyone, one does not inject crack, it is smoked. this is the point of converting cocaine to crack. you can inject cocaine or heroin or other things if you like, but leave the crack to us crackheads!
