| | | NOLA Thomas Edison Elem. < on 3/5/2009 2:35 AM >
| | | Ok people...another school... This one is Thomas Edison Elementary. This building has suffered flood damage so the first floor has some black mold but a lot of the rooms have been remediated. One cool feature was the vast amount of murals in every classroom. Nearly every room had whatever subject was taught there painted in huge letters all over the wall. Also I was really fascinated by the floor plan of the whole thing. None of the classrooms are completely sealed off with doors or walls so you can walk in a circle through every room on a floor without ever having to open a door. There are also huge moveable walls that can be pushed and rotated to create smaller side rooms which I found to be a pretty interesting concept. Things to check out upon visit would be most definitely the east room of the second floor which had an entire wall of clocks all stopped at 4:03:39 (when power was lost because of the flood?) Take a look at the maze of pipes in the maintainance halls and be sure to stop by the most gigantic bee hive you will ever see in your entire life (3rd fl west side.) Also I'm completely open to any ideas on the symbolism behind the mask we found on the roof. It was laying next to the sign for the girls bathroom and in my opinion looks exactly like Salad Fingers... For those of you who don't know Salad Fingers, prepare yourselves. http://www.youtube...atch?v=M3iOROuTuMA

| | | That floor plan is a an "open" flow type that was popular in the 70's when education was about feeling good about yourself and teachers were teaching core subjects instead of having a "homeroom" with the same 20 students. (I teach, so that's how I know.) It went away with standardized testing and federal funding. Notice the small windows? There was an "energy crisis" in the 70's when Carter was president and buildings were designed to save energy... small windows, mudrooms and low ceilings were all the rage. | | | hummm... that would make sense because everything really did spiral around and "flow" from one room to another. I tried to find out when the building was constructed but came to no avail. It is and older building though. My guess would have been 70's or 80's. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, seriously!! Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |
