My "Annoying Star"...

I'd like to appeal for the removal of that star.

Quite frankly, it's not helping. And while I'm not completely sure if it is the reason why some people are still treating me as though I am causing them a great deal of grief, I am definately sure that it must be reminding them of all the arguments I got into before I left.

Since I've been back, I have noticed that I've been recieving a disproporationate amount of "hate" compaired to the amount I dish out. Which, I might add, has now been reduced to little or none. The annoying star has already confused a couple of new users, one of them so much so that they PMed me to ask what it was all about.

I'm a little concerned that the star serves no purpose but to incite aggression, confusion, and adverse reactions. Well, not a little concerned, I'm very concerned.

A small group of people about these forums are starting up touchy situations between me and them, by making comments of a hostile nature. These comments are usually in response to something I have posted, which incidentally and in most cases, are not of a particularly subversive or controversial nature.

I am always left to try and calm these situations down, by either ignoring it, or expressing my neutral intentions, and offering an apologetic stance. It is my personal beleif, that I will be put into these situations much less often if people are not reminded that I have been branded as a nuisance.

I do not deny that I have earned that star - but I must protest against those who beleive that I am fully the cause. The point at which I am at fault, is where I react badly to aggression and hostility from others. Instead of passing up on an invitation to a fight, I would rise to it, and allow for an argument to begin.

Part of becoming a better person is recognising what you've been doing wrong in the past, and I beleive I have done that successfully. The other part is doing something about it, and I beleive that so far, I have proved my ability to do this too.

So, as I stated earlier, I would like to appeal for my star to be removed. I apologise for the verbose nature of this post, but I beleive it has to be said, and put across as well as possible. Please try and avoid skim reading if you can, as it is important you understand my side of the story in its entirity.

-Chikote.

I think a lot of people are upset about your exaggerated and unreliable posts, or they remember your previous incarnations and associate you with what you said back then. The reaction you get on the forums is more a result of your own actions and words than the fact that you have an annoying star (the star is most likely a result of the same factors).

I'm willing to give you another chance, if you try to increase the intelligence of your posts I'll stop making smartass comments about you. I can't speak for Av about the annoying star.

I kind of don't get the whole annoying star thing... I know that it's a form of punishment to persuade someone to behave, but it seems like there might be better ways of doing that. Some people might see the annoying star as a "license to flame this person star", you know? Or it might just ostracize the person who gets it and inflame whatever situation's going on. I mean, I understand the idea, but it seems like it has the potential to do more harm than good. Just my $.02.

To me, it's that you're usually an expert on everything, yet haven't yet had even a shred of proof to back up anything. I do think you've been better behaved so far, but not fully non-annoying or people wouldn't have issues with things you've said. I don't see the reason for the annoying star to be removed yet.

With or without the star I still think you'd find yourself a target of animosity from some of the inflated egos around here. You're an easy target even without the bullseye on your ass.

I respect your well written appeal to have your star removed but I think your best course of action would be to laugh it off - don't take it too seriously.

Whinning about it will only draw more heat from the stuffed shirts. Consider it a hazing if you will - as you participate more and more it will become less and less important what stars you have...

Where does this "expert on everything" fiction come from? I offer what I know. Yes sometimes I don't back everything I say up by going and reading books on it, or by google searching it, but I don't just make things up.

I say what I say because I am trying to contribute, I tell you people what I know on the subject because I want to help. I'm not trying to make myself look good, and I am definately not trying to impress people.

I don't mean to contest your point of view, because it is quite clearly founded on your own personal experiences, but "not fully non-annoying" doesn't exactly amount to pissing people off alot. I don't see the lynch mobs forming on the hills at sundown. In fact I've been involved in quite literrally jack shit as far as big fights and arguments are concerned.

I must ask that you consider whether people still have issues with me because of what I have said, or because they just don't like me.

People are tetchy, jumpy, and are starting at me with bad attitude over nothing. For instance, in a thread about water mains, Mr.X jumped down my throat for something I said about the pipes being made of stainless steel where I live. On numerous other occasions, Mr.X has pounced on me with a rather heartless array of unnessacery comments and names.

My so called "previous incarnations" are based on nothing but speculation, and an increadibly vague similarity when comparing two perfectly clear webcam shots, with my disgustingly blurry scanned image. The whole thing is a sketchy coincidence at best.

But I digress. My real aim is to show people that they can't just flame at me whenever they want regardless of whether I have said something before that "annoyed" them or not. And I feel that the moderators are unwilling to do anything about it, because they would rather see me take shots in the chest just as much as these other people. That annoying star helps me just about as much as everyone being hostile helps me. You can't expect me to put up with all the shit forever without at least once cracking under pressure and telling some stupid joe to shut the fuck up.

Star or no star, I'm still getting alot of flak from people, even when haven't offended them. I quite agree with WRabbit that people are probably treating the annoying star as a license to flame me star.

Quite frankly, it's very appropriate, IMO. Have you paused to consider the possibility that the reason "some people are still treating me as though I am causing them a great deal of grief" is because you continue to cause them a great deal of grief?

Since I've been back, I have noticed that I've been recieving a disproporationate amount of "hate" compaired to the amount I dish out. Which, I might add, has now been reduced to little or none. The annoying star has already confused a couple of new users, one of them so much so that they PMed me to ask what it was all about.

A clue: People don't hate you because you hate them, people hate you because 1, you said you were leaving, left, lied, and returned; 2, you have a God complex, and 3, you seem unable, unwilling, or uncaring to differentiate knowledge, experience, suspicion, speculation, hearsay, and fantasy, yet choose to present (and believe) the above as absolute and infalliable truth, and get/act pissy on the frequent occasions that you're wrong to a greater or lesser extent. Don't just "not hate", but also "not cause others to hate".

I'm a little concerned that the star serves no purpose but to incite aggression, confusion, and adverse reactions. Well, not a little concerned, I'm very concerned.

A lot of us are a little concerned that your mere continued presence here serves no purpose but to incite aggression, confusion, and the spouting of nonsensical self-serving cowpoop. Well, not a little concerned, a lot concerned.

True... but that last sentance is no longer true if you replace "subversive or controversial" with "ignorant or just plain wrong".

I am always left to try and calm these situations down, by either ignoring it, or expressing my neutral intentions, and offering an apologetic stance. You claim to not deny that you've "earned" the star, yet you are unwilling to accept enough responsibility for your actions that you want to "appeal" it? Please.

Part of becoming a better person is recognising what you've been doing wrong in the past, and I beleive I have done that successfully. The other part is doing something about it, and I beleive that so far, I have proved my ability to do this too.

We could have a poll, but I think the jury's very much still out on this one. You've been back, what, two weeks or so in "Lesser Asshole Mode"? That's hardly enough time to see whether the supposed conversion is real or if you're going to fall off the wagon.

So you're trying to do something about being/having been an ass. Fine. Have you apologized to Av, or anyone else, for returning repeatedly under new guises after being banned and acting every bit as though the rules don't apply to you?

I have to side with Jester on this one... Until the creation and implementation of a "Self-Proclaimed Know-It-All Mr. Special Star", I fully support the continued existance of your "Annoying Star". Frankly, if I could, I'd add a second one, but I can't. Small mercies, I suppose.

Besides, in the end, it's up to Av, and Av alone...

I have considered whether I am actually causing anybody greif. And my conclusion is yes, I have caused people grief, but only in the PAST. Currently, people are just acting on hostility from old old arguments. The kind of "I punched you today because you dented my car last year" syndrome.

1. I didn't say I was leaving for good. 2. I do not have a God complex. 3. Sometimes I just don't have time to back up what I say by researching it, but if something I say is incorrect, just ignore it instead of making a song, dance, play, and broadway performance out of it. I'll happily admit I'm wrong if you would just shut the fuck up about how much of an asshole I am.

A lot of us are a little concerned that your mere continued presence here serves no purpose but to incite aggression, confusion, and the spouting of nonsensical self-serving cowpoop. Well, not a little concerned, a lot concerned.

I came back because I like it here. Despite the continued abuse from people such as yourself, there are some very nice people here. Some of which even appreciate my presence, imagine that!

True... but that last sentance is no longer true if you replace "subversive or controversial" with "ignorant or just plain wrong".

What part of being wrong/misinformed deserves getting flamed? To me that is your God complex. You think that because you are treated as a better person than me, you must therefore have a liscense to attack me whenever I make an error. I can't imagine how you would react if someone were to treat you the same way, ever consider that?

If it quacks like a duck...

The it's either someone impresonating a duck, a game hunter, or a duck. But I don't see what that has to do with anything. If you're going to make a smart ass comment, you might as well make something a little less cryptic so that us "ignorant people" will get it.

You claim to not deny that you've "earned" the star, yet you are unwilling to accept enough responsibility for your actions that you want to "appeal" it? Please.

I accept responsibility for my actions, but there is a point where you have to forgive and forget. I earned the star through things that I have no stopped doing. But you can't expect these things to ever get better if you continually punish me, because it will get to a point when you completely forget what you are punishing me for, and just punish me because it helps you releive stress.

We could have a poll, but I think the jury's very much still out on this one. You've been back, what, two weeks or so in "Lesser Asshole Mode"? That's hardly enough time to see whether the supposed conversion is real or if you're going to fall off the wagon.

Why would I stop being an asshole, just to get a star removed, so that I could be an asshole again? This doesn't make sense. If you read my first post, you would see that I want the star removed so that I would no longer be viewed as an asshole.

So you're trying to do something about being/having been an ass. Fine. Have you apologized to Av, or anyone else, for returning repeatedly under new guises after being banned and acting every bit as though the rules don't apply to you?

I have not returned under new guises. You think that, you do not know that, and that is a contradiction on your argument against me for not backing up enough of my "speculation".

If Avatar-X and his cronies want an apology from me, they aren't getting a written one. My apology to Av, and all the moderators that I have annoyed, is my consious effort to change and be a better person here.

You sure would like to brand me with whatever hateful parifinalia you could, and I bet it's because it is about as big a rock as you could throw at me without getting into much trouble. Frankly, I hate you, I hate your fucking guts, along with the rest of you that beat me up on the flavor of the moment.

You innovate ways to offend me without getting into trouble. And you've become especially good at it. You, ben, Mr.X, Krazy... you're all geniuses in the field of stealth mud throwing.

But at least I TRY to get along with you. When I see you making a better effort than me to just get along without arguments, perhaps then I'll show the respect that's due. But so far you have shown no willingness, or ability, to even have a go at being nice. Even though we are on bad terms.

Actually, I'd say more of it comes from your posting style than those webcam shots. All of the previous incarnations had the same know-it-all-until-I'm-proven-wrong-then-blow-it-off-as-a-joke attitude. They were also all from the UK. They were all equally annoying. The webcam shots helped to further fuel the speculation.

Sure, you may have toned it down a bit, but the same tendencies are there. You're still annoying (I still get complaints from users about you), so I think the star is still justified. You're still posting alot of stuff that seems like speculation and stuff not based on personal experience as facts.

I've preached no ethical dogma to you. The only thing I've said (in a nice way) was to cut the bullshit, cause nobody is buying it. It is because of the often innaccurate information that you post that many people are annoyed by you. If we ignore it, someone else who doesn't know better might read the shit you post and take it for the truth, when it's just speculation.

You do make things up. You lie; this is why I personally believe that star should remain a permanent fixture next to your name.

Chikote, if you were smart you'd follow your own words and leave. Then come back under a brand new moniker. This way you could once again start over, without the annoying star. Heck, we could even place bets on the first person to guess your new identity. It would be fun!

Plus, he's been TONS better since he came back - truth be told, I've actually enjoyed reading many of his posts. As i've said before, all of him (every incarnation) has been the same; an "expert" thats never even done anything and can't even be bothered to post accurate info when he does try to pretend he's done something, that tries to tell those of us that actually accomplish things, how to do it. If this was an aoutomotive forum he'd be an ace mechanic and racecar driver. He can't seem to grasp that if he just laid off trying to impress people with knowing everything, people might actually not hate him...

Chipotle; did it ever occur to you that your're the ONLY person to have the star? I wouldn't mind that.
Chipotle is all right by me. The whole thing early on with the name change and leaving to write his memoirs and stuff was kind of wierd, but it definitely made things interesting (and sometimes funny) After all it's only a forum, and like one of the prior posters mentioned he's not throwing out useless crap.
Not only that but he hangs around even after being branded with the star, and still tries to contribute here.
On a serious note, some of the posts may seem exaggerated but the Brits have a certain way of being EXTREMELY descriptive when relating a story (Chipote please don't take this as an insult, it's like you saying Americans are short tempered and abrupt, which is sometimes true). I think some of you people have interpreted his stories as exaggeration (and some of it may have been) but in general he was just enjoying the telling of his story.
Chipotle, you're all right by me, in some cases you've kept me entertained for hours.
In short, everyone lighten up. Even if he's a total fraud, it's better than alot of the fourteen year old kids that post nonsense, and at least it's entertaining. One thing you should do Chipotle is start posting some locations; Turbozutek is over in Scotland or Whales (can't remember which) and he's enjoying the crap out of this hobby with some great locations explored ( and there are many.
