Captain Jack goes to a Tropical Island

Bonaire

Last month my wife and I went on a diving and exploring vacation to an island called Bonaire. It’s a protectorate of Holland and is located off the coast of Venezuela near Aruba. She picked what is was probably the best ½ star inn on the island. The rooms where economy but it was right on the water and possible to dive off their dock and swim to the reef 100 feet or so away. The two things on virtually every guest there was go diving or take it easy.
1.

One of the coolest things about the place was the communal kitchen and dining area down by the water. The Inn’s housekeeper cooked a great breakfast but the other meals where up to us. We made a lot of friends at those tables and had a good time.
2.

Instead of the squirrels we are used to here they have Iguana Lizards. There behavior is much like squirrels as they climb trees, steel food and chew on buildings. I got chewed on a couple of times by ones that mistook my toes for something to eat.
3.

Like squirrels the buggers had even gotten inside walls and had chewed a hole in the ceiling of our rooms porch.
4.

Despite the tropical look along the shore this island was formed by volcanic activity long ago and much of it has the appearance of being in the US west. Tons of cactus and large rock formations are common in the interior areas.
5.

There is so much cactus that it is commonly used for fencing. Cactus limbs are cut, woven into a wire fence and stuck into the ground where they grow into an impenetrable thicket of needles.
6.

The place also has hundred of wild donkeys running around.
7.

In many areas the rocks and cactus go right up to the sea.
8.

That’s all the pictures I have ready for now. Later on I’ll post a few underwater shots and some of the abandonments I found while I was there.

We live in hope!

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.
